you guys with model a's that are running "god forbid" a sbc with a short pump where did you mount your alternator? Can I see some pics? I was going to use a low mount but I don't think there is enough room.
on my `28 tudor with SBC , i have it mounted on the passenger side right above the manifold.....this mount is basically a mid 70's smog pump mounting bracket, which was very popular before the aluminum brackets came on the market speedway sells them , check their online catalog
Frankie, If you are running the 70's style heads with the bolt holes, GM still seels the vette mounts that mount the alt on the drivers side and the adjustment bar mounts on the top water pump bolt on the same side. The alt mount is alum and the adjuster is steel. Check with a GM dealers and ask for the short water pump mounts, they were the same until 82' Wayne
on my 30 A w/sbc I am setting it up with the generic low mount bracket every one on ebay sells. it is a tight fit but there is enough room and is barley noticable. my front spring mount was trimed before i bought it so im not sure if there are any clearence issues there.
thanks guys, I'm going to try a smaller late model cs-121 alternator and fab a low mount for it. My engine is mounted low and the the tie rod would only be about 1 1/2" at ride height from the low mount bracket that everyone sells for a standard gm alt. I'm getting the alternator built tomorow and it should give me another 1 1/2" plus it puts out about 90 amps at idle, not that I need that much. If I can't make it work I'll go with the one 36-3window is using I saw that in speedway also. I know the stock vette mount will work too but I dont want the alternator hanging out past the grill shell. If I get the small alt. on there I'll post some pics.
Instead of fabbing one Mooneyes makes a great low mount chrome mount cheaper then you could build one for a SBC.
do they make the mount for the small alt. or just for a regular delco ? Like I said, I don't have room for the regular low mount. besides that I doubt its cheaper than free I give myself a 100% discount on my regular shop time of $32.00/hr.
I think just the regular but i thought i didn't have room either til i tryed one. You can always send it back.
I used a '75 chevy V8 Monza alt bracket. It mounts the alt on the passenger side above the intake. Total Performance makes a similar bracket. Both are cast iron.
