Go easy on me, I couldnt find anything specific on this. So I have a ***le for my truck, vin is different than what is on the door jamb plate but I have been told the number was actually on the engine, and of course I don't have the og engine. Anyway, ***le is handled and in my name no problem. I may have found a cab that is in much better shape than mine for dirt cheap but it is a 53 and mine is a 50. My original plan was to stamp a new door plate with the VIN from the ***le so it matches, but if I go with this new cab I will have a 81 Camaro clip, 1950 rear frame and body panels, but a 53 cab. How will this affect me down the road? Say if I were to try and sell the vehicle? When I registered it they just took the ***le and bill of sale and a **** ton of my money because I am honest enough to tell them how much I actually paid for the truck (or stupid enough), and didnt even bat an eye, and a week later I had a new ***le in my name. So with that experience I dont think it will be an issue, its not like they came to my house and sifted thorough the pile of parts that was a truck to verify anything...
I wouldn't buy a truck from you if it had a hand stamped VIN tag, or the VIN on the ***le was not on the truck anywhere.
I would be put off as well, too bad I wasnt when I actually bought the truck... I realize we are getting into an area that has been discussed numerous times here, so I guess I'll just cross that bridge if I ever get to it. As of this point I dont plan on selling it anyway...
In OK you can do a ***le 42 which is like a lost ***le application, and they will give you a ***le in the vin that matches the car/truck.
Can you get a "builders ***le"? Take the different numbers off of the frame, body, etc, have it inspected and get a new vin# and ***le. You might check with your states DMV about it....
You said you want to change the cab. Go find a truck with a clean ***le and matching Id number. Change the cab and part out rest of the truck. It may not be 100% legal. But stamping ID numbers your self is a can of worms you do not want to open.
Changing or messing with that stuff is a felony. Old news, but I would not get involved with it myself. Just saying..... Cheers.....
maybe its just me and my stupidity, youth, or i just dont care. but i would just find a replacement vin tag and get it stamped. i mean how many vehicles out there dont have tags on them any more or have been pieced together, or the tag is so beat up that it is not ledgable. i would think that this is common practice...i mean people mix differnt parts all the time. if my cab is shot and another one doesnt have a stamp but is in good condition cant i replace it with out h***el? maybe im wrong just my thoughts.
You are in the great and reasonably free state of TEXAS. If you are not intentionally trying to defraud anyone and your intentions are honorable carefully restamp a new tag and believe me your truck will live with that ***le for the rest of it's life! Many vehicles that I have built over the years have had unreadable id plates or were lost, but the ***le in hand is what matters here. Tags on early vehicles were often screwed on, rivited etc. and often require restamping and or replacement. Just don't do it to cover up a theft or any other devious purpose and you'll be fine.
If the ***le has the original engine number on it go to the dmv and ask for an "engine change notation on your ***le. They will then use the number off the door post tag or issue a new tag. My 48 had a Texas engine change ***le when I bought it in 1973. If you have the old tag of the old cab I would put that on the new cab so the year model matches the ***le.
My thoughts exactly. I mean, I don't even have anyway to "prove" the ***le I have is for the truck I have anyway, as the engine is no longer original. I had no issue getting that ***le transferred into my name and like you said, I am not starting a cl***ic car theft ring. I'll get plates and a sticker and a new id tag with the id # on the ***le and life goes on. In the event I ever do have to sell it I will explain the whole deal and if the buyer isnt comfortable then we will move along. Thanks for the replies guys.... Oh, btw, the cab I bought is not a 53. Doesnt have the vent window which puts it at 50 or older, has the side cab vent as well as the frame having telescopic shocks instead of lever action means its a 50, even better!!
texas is like az the only time they look at the vin is if its out of state or someone calls the cops and clams it to be there's if you want the ***le on the door you have to file for a abandon ***le it costs about 500 bucks or so and takes about 9 weeks i had a friend from san anto do it 4 a savage bike . i sent it 2 him because texas does not do savage so when it was all over it was a free and clear ***le but it was a pain..
