Hi guys, I recently acquired a sbc that has low miles on it since rebuilt. It's been sitting for 3-4 years on a stand. The guy wanted a hotter engine in his car, so this one got pulled. I want to replace all the gaskets/seals before it gets dropped in the '63. My quesions are how hard is it to replace the seal that's under the crank with a 2 piece seal? Can I simply start the new seal on 1 side, and push in the new while pushing the old 1 out? Also how hard is it to replace the cap on the back of the cam? It the only spot on the engine that's leaking slightly. Thanks in advance, Dave
They make a device called a "sneaky pete" that is designed to spin the new 2pc seal in. IIRC, the cam has to come out to get that rear cap out. Not my first choice, but I have successfully sealed oil leaks like that from the outside using Permatex Ultra Grey. Just FYI...
Dave, Here's a post on another forum about R&R'ing the seal; http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/sbc-rear-main-seal-206530.html As for the cam plug, pry it out using a heel bar with the corners sharpened. Clean the bore with brakleen & install the new plug with non-hardening permatex. Good luck -Dave
You can change the cam plug without removing the cam. Drill a small hole, put a sheet metal screw in it and pry it out.
The heelbar trick works well,...Just be sure to use a bit of finesse...and work the bar around the plug. I like to use "hardening" type "permatex" on those. Happy Roddin' 4TTRUK
Thanks guys. Sounds pretty straight forward. I thought I was going to have to fully disassemble the engine lol.
