I pulled a 1965 390fe motor and c6 trans out of a parts car to go in a 52 ford pickup, it ran but had a bad ****** leak out of the front i pulled the trans off and my torque converter is EXTREMELY rough where it goes into the seal i looked up several converters to buy a new one and all i can find is for a 66and up c6 trans

does anyone know if there is a difference in the 65 and 66 or what i can do to find one

It's been a long time but I seem to recall that pre-65 engines had a different size hole in the crankshaft for the clutch pilot bearing and the pilot on the torque converter goes in the same hole. They usually list 66 and up because there are both around in 65. It's like the 5 bolt or 6 bolt bell housings on sbf. A transmission shop might be able to tell you for sure.

Is it only the seal surface or is the bearing surface bad too? There are speedy sleeves available to repair the sealing area. They are a thin stainless steel sleeve that covers the damaged area. If the groove is real deep, put some type of epoxy filler in before installing the sleeve.

If everything is original and is indeed a 65 model, then the transmission is a Cruisomatic. Not a C6.

C-6 trans was not introduced until 1966 so you have a FMX/Cruise-o-Matic.

Converters are not hard to come by. Those transmissions were used deep into the 70's behind 351-400 engines although a 351-400 converter will not work behind a FE.

Easy to tell the difference. The Fordomatic has a cast iron case while the C6 has an aluminum case.

On a FMX/Cruiso the bell housing is aluminum and unscrews from the trans with 4 bolts like a stick.

check out the pump before you put the trans back it. if the snout on the converter is chewed then the inside of the pump may be too, if its too worn a new seal/converter still wont hold back the fluid.
