I just realized that my old dodge was a 6V system. Somewhere along the way someone added a newer alternator and a 12V battery.....I figure that as soon as the light switch was pulled it blew every light in the system.(I havent checked yet) So what else am I goiung to run into????
Well, it depends on how far the other guy went??? Is it a 1 wire alternator, or a 3 or 4 wire plug. You will need to change ALL the bulbs. [ but i guess you found that out ]Any relays for horn, clock those kind of things. It may still have the old voltage regulator. That's if the alternator is a 1 wire. So what kind of things are you looking to trade for?? I have a 48 Desoto 4 door sedan, runs and drives but needs a front clip, that needs a new home. Let me know! I also have a 48 plymouth and a 51 chevy Coupe. Thanks Wayne
don't be too concerned with the wires themselves....12volt means less current. All the devices will need attention.
^^^^^^ X2 Easier on the wires themselves as well as connections/ terminals. Twice the volts, half the amps.
any of the gauges that are electrical (fuel gauge) radio, lights, horn relay, turn signals, etc that are six volt will smoke in a 12 volt system with out a voltage reducing resistor.
The problems with that are (1) even small 12v alternators are capable of producing twice current output of the typical 6v generator, and (2) 70+ year old wiring needs to be changed, period! It's most/always cloth-covered and totally shot by that age. BTJMO
