Need some help guys. I found a 1950 Fleetline second owner 90K miles and really clean. NO RUST, Great Chrome, and Gl*** (was always in heated garage). Original paint is in really good shape with a couple of dings and one quarter spot with a tiny bit of surface rust. New radiator, fresh carb rebuild. The original interior is very useable. I hate the 216 engine but it seems to run well and is very clean. I did see some JB Weld on the block toward the back driver side but it was not leaking and it ran cool. Owner was asking 8500.00. I offered 5,500 and after going back and forth he agreed on the 5,500. Oh and the car could use tires. Should I buy at 5,500?
Serious question? If it is solid as what you mentioned yes you should buy it, otherwise stop wasting the guys time. Those 216 engines I consider junk. Drop a 235 or go with a v-8 once you get it.

So let me get this straight. You negotiated to YOUR price, and now you run to the HAMB to ask opinions as to whether you should buy it? If I were the cars owner, and you pulled that ****, I'd put new tires on it and then invite you to shove the old ones up your ****. You are the reason I never, never, NEVER negotiate without seeing some money. When I was selling cars after I got out of college, I learned that buyers were liars. I actually told a guy who said he had to "ask his wife", after negotiating a deal, to bring her down to the lot and we'd ****'er. He didn't get it, and you probably don't either.
Craigslist is full of dreamers and time wasters. I never deal with folks that make offers over the phone. Drive over, check out the car and make an offer with cash in hand, otherwise gtfo of here and stop wasting my time. The guy has a ford, probably didn't know the value of a chevrolet bomb, that's why he asked. Or ???
Just so I am straight since a few are getting heated....I made an offer and did not commit to purchase. I told the owner that now that we agreed on a price I would sit on it for a day and let him know. I am not in a rush and I did not want to put pressure on the seller either. I want the deal to be good for both of us.
I've noticed on this website you got to put every little detail about what you are about to write or you'll get shotdown quicker than a mofo. Well good luck with that purchase and if you don't buy it, p*** me the info.
Thanks for the help guys. This is my first chevy experience. I love the fleetline and this is the first one I actually looked at to purchase. I think I got lucky. The car is a sweat heart.
You did good. 216's are not junk, but it doesn't take much to turn them into it. A 235 or even better, a 230 or 250 would be great in that car.

Looks like a nice ride. I'm a big fan of the Bomb myself Why Chevrolet would design an OHV engine in the 30s using babbit bearings and splash lubrication is beyond me. Really stupid. What was really dumb was putting those things under the hoods of heavy trucks (currently I got a blown one in a dump truck). I'd run that 216 till it blows (which probably won't be long) and get a real motor under the hood like a 235 with insert bearings. Could go real crazy and get a GMC six which is a much better motor than those old Chevy splashers could ever hope to be.

Looks like a great buy at $5500. I'd put some wide whites on it, lower it a little, a set of dual pipes and just drive and enjoy it. Don't hold your breath waiting for the 216 to turn into "junk". If you drive it sensibly, and change the oil regularly it'll go farther and run harder than most folks think.
Looks great man, i hope you just lower it a bit and throw on some wide whites. its only original once, theres plenty of fleetlines already messed with that would be great for customs, this ones perfect how it is. JMO

WOW! looks nice, mine was way worse off at the beginning and I paid 5K for it but oh well, it's getting there now. I'm glad to see you disregarding the negative comments, everyone needs encouragement and if you're like me it's nice to hear fellow hambers support your decision even after you've secured an offer.
