Ok guys this is the problem. At speeds over about 60 mph i start to get a vibration through the car where everything starts to rattle and am trying to find the source.I have transverse leaf front and rear with 2 solid axles. When i'm travelling down the freeway it can make my cd player stop playing. Now i thought it was wheel balance so i had this done and although it got slightly better i still have it.Is this normal with x plies and rigid axles? will i have to just live with it?................Marq

  2. no , that's not normal , you have something out of balance or bent...like maybe the driveshaft,or a bad u-joint. .. could be a brake drum or brake rotor , even though you balanced the wheels/tires, they can be out of balance too

no, I believe drive shafts will have a harmonic vibration only set off at certain RPM.

This is how I do front wheel bearings...
about one pinkie finger's pressure on the spanner with the wheel spun by hand, then back the nut off to the last flat that allows the cotter pin to go in...

Yes they will. I have dealt with it many times.

What are your the u joint angles on your driveshaft like?
http://www.4xshaft.com/ This is geared to the 4x4 world, but the info is good and can be applied to any vehicle. I have seen some very low cars with the driveline going up to the rearend....angles are angles no matter which way. A driveline needs some angle, perfectly flat can create a vibe. make the axles at each end and the harmonics will cancel each out....If the pinion has 2 dergrees, set the ****** out put so it has 2 degrees as well.

Marq, I think you have to pst some more specifics if you want us to guess what the problem is.

Do you have a Ford tube style driveshaft? If so, I wouldn't consider it to be the culprit. Your bias plys are probably exacerbating the problem, wherever it's coming from.

I'd jack up each wheel. See if there's any play in each. Spin each wheel and see where it stops. If the same part of the tread is up (or down) when it stops each time, it's out of balance.

Ok guys i think i have it.I phoned my local drive shaft place and he said that he thought the uj bolts were too tight on the rear and to back them off and retighten to 14-18 nm which i have done and i can now listen to my stereo as the vibration seems mostly to have gone and i can now live with it at 80-100 mph .............Marq

the guy told me if you overtighten that one side of the joint is loose then the other is tight and it creates a tight loose effect which in turn comes out as vibration .At first it dont show itself cos the needle rollers are all ok but they then wear a slight notch and then the vibration appears.i'm hoping it will last for the time being and i hope i caught it in time lol......Marq

Brake drums are balanced when new. You can have them balanced if you think it is the drums.

  25. For some reason, this reminded me of something that happened to my wife in England. One day she told me she had gotten stopped for speeding and would have to go to court. After her court appearance, she told me she got fined 100 quid. Several years later she got a little tipsy and I heard her tell her sister she got fined 300 quid. Since she was kind of cornered, she told me the truth.

She had left the motorway, but was still on a dual carriageway (4 lane road). She p***ed an unmarked police car and the car they were chasing. The cops abandoned the chase on the other car and took off after my wife. She never told me her speed, but she was in an Audi 80 Sport 2l. It was capable of 125 MPH.
