Bad taste, or 'bolt-on-fever'? If you work outside in winter, with no tools and no money, you use what you find. This chop was done with a hack-saw, on 5th Ave West & 3rd St., Duluth MN. Anyone guess that grille, I think it's pretty cool!
Great group of old photos, Farmer. Really nice contrast and edge blur--high quality--and sooo Upper-Midwest (snow and all)--except for that bad-ass jacket. I'm sure, "you stay away from that boy down the street," was preached to more than one daughter in the neighborhood. BTW I looked at your gallery and am diggin that little, red fendered RPU. That's a great looking truck. Good luck with your hunt that 36/40 is much better proportioned than I would've imagined. Sweet sance, too.
Very neat car, and history too. Grill area has a Pines Winterfront grill cover, minus the sliding doors. Grill bars behind are most likely homemade. Steve
Yeah, an accessory piece. REALLY desireable for '32 Fords, but not so for '36 cars. The company was out of Milwaukee and made all kinds of trim stuff too. The Pine's trim strips for the '36 Ford are somewhat desireable pieces now. Steve
Really really nice car. I wonder what kind of screamin monkeys the guy that made it yellow had in his head! This version rules so much. But better even, this version w/ the grille it had originally like on the picture below would really be the shizzit.
Thank my sister for finding these: Friends helping Ray put on '40 clip over rebuilt flatty! Lots to ponder here;channel was done, top chopped, motor$$, News article describes a finished car in August '55. Date winter 54? Everybody is gone now...
What a great looking car. I love the proportions on it Both with the custom 36 Ford grille/fenders as well as with the 1940 Ford front on it. I will keep an eye out for it. I hope it is still around. Thanks for sharing the photos and story
Saw it at the Nats in St Paul in 82 (?) Might have some photo's of it in the storage units... it'll be a long time to sort through them... but I'll plug away and see what I can find.
Thanks 2 all Hambers here! Rikster, please share. More pics will post next couple of days. My sister is here with a new-found trove of my Dad's stuff!
My buddy Johny Z has talked about that car before i believe, and i think its still around in the cities here, i know hes talked about a 36 coupe with a 40 front, so unless theres another one around (which is possible) it could still be around, if i remember correctly a one of his freinds dad has the car, but im not sure, next time i talk to him ill ask, also i remember hearing your fathers name in one of the many many stories Johnny or his dad karl told. jeff
Thanks Titus! Last we heard the car was in Hudson, Wisconsin. I hope I can give the stories and pictures to the person who has it now. My dream is to have my picture taken next to it, maybe just sit in it! Enjoy some interior. Sorry if this is off topic - I know stick to cars...
Check out the snazzy upholstered insert above the grille! Original color shots, unfaded, Duluth Armory -London Rd, 1958 or 1959.
ok, this a cool thread...my Dad grew up in Cloquet, just outside Duluth..I'll look for pics of his 36 he had before the Korean war..Grandpa drove it, said it was "too hot-rodded"(!), and sold it when Dad went overseas...Dad always told stories about that car when we were wrenching in the garage. Hope you find that car, Farmer!
These pics were pasted behind a large family photo - there is a set I am scanning. Address; 1815 E Third Street, Duluth MN. Year;1962
Car Farmer, What an incredible story! Your father lived the American Teenager's dream! I sure hope you find it and can be brought back to life. Bud Reynolds
If you don't come up with anything here you might try sending a couple photos to the Linechaser with a short article about its history. I did that a few months ago for the daughter of a buddy of mine who passed. After a couple of years poking around on my own, it only took a month or so - with the help of several long-time MSRA members - and the car was located. If I can help, PM me. I've seen pix of that car many times over the years, and knew who originally built it although I don't think I ever had the chance to see it up close and personal. It's cool, and a piece of hot rod history. Good luck with your search. It's out there somewhere, you'll find it...
I love those old B&W pics you just added , I love the cars history..it has to still be around someplace!
Video of the missing Duluth Hot Rod -Youtube! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hPef8ZEuO8 "Park Point Cruize" music by our surf band, the 'DoubleChucks' Cool? I thought a montage would be more fun than pic posts (for now).
