Finally have enough progress to start a build thread. Going with a mid 60's era drag car look with an Injected 289 ,four speed, white exterior, tear drop hood , fiberglass bumpers and stock black interior . Finished both torque boxes and front floors tonight after a good while working on them. All in all everything came out looking really good ,both torque boxes were rotted to the point I had to look at other cars to see what was going on with them. So heres some pics cause this thread is useless without them...Jim
Jim;looks great! Those new torque boxes look better than new! I wish I would have done new floor sections instead of making patch panels.Your plans sound great, keep the updates coming!! ROY.
Those new panels look really good. The rest of the floor looks good, too. Must have just been really rusty in the corners? Mike
Thanks for the comments guys means alot !! this weekend gonna start swapping out core supports and get drivers apron panel cut and boxed in for the air inlet hose. More pics to come in a few days... Jim
Nice repair on those torque boxes. I have a Comet sedan as well and will be watching your progress closely.
Alot of stuff going on right now so not much time to rip into anything but i did manage to get garaged cleaned out and the car outside and able to take a look from further than 3 feet. Got in touch with some guys that know a lot more than me about mods that were made back in the day to get these things looking and running bad ass. So heres some shots of the car outside before I start on it and a little teaser of the motor direction Im going with ..Enjoy Jim
Once again time for an update ,this time I actually have gotten something done. It's been good to get downstairs and start cuttin metal again. On the chopping block this weekend was the passenger side core support. The donor piece i got was good on both ends but junk in the middle so i thought it would be best just to put both ends on leaving the rest of the core support intact .First off I braced everything up. Then measured both pieces out a number of times rechecking myself, making notes all over the car of measurements to recheck placement. I then started to cut the donor piece off then held my breath and started cutting into the car. After some minimal regrinding I got the new piece in place and everything back in place . I gotta replace the battery tray were it was rotted but Ill do that before I weld it back up for good..Enjoy the pics..Jim
Subscribing. '64 Comets are one of my favorite looking cars. I'm doing a similar build with a '62 Fairlane. My torque boxes weren't as bad, though, but the floors are worse. Good luck!
Checked out your pics ,your '62 looks pretty clean....Jim O I will take the pics is a good way of keeping the fire goin...Jim
Jim;it is strange where some cars rot out!! It looks like you handled that repair well, looks good!! ROY.
Thanks Roy..The more I looked I was going to be getting rid of more good metal than I was gaining so I opted for just the end swap. And to be honest the way they have these core supports attached I thought as soon as I cut this thing loose shit was gonna go everywhere..lol...Thanks Jim Thanks Jon..I NEVER messed around with this type of mechanical injection so I have my fingers crossed everything will come out good. Theres a HAMB'R I've been in contact with(Alkydigger) about this setup ,I just got to get him some pics and specs and he's gonna get me squared away...Thanks Jim
Time for another round of pics. All that has gotten done is the core support finish welded and a new battery tray fabbed up and welded in .Welds still need gone over but I ran outta discs so I'll get to that this week when I start on the drivers side. The battery tray was made from a CRUDE stamp using a wooden 6x6 and some 1/4 inch plate, after seeing the thread on STAMPING and some of the incredible stuff these guys are doing I'm not about to put pics of mine here. But the end result was good ...lol Enjoy the pics....Jim
Another quick update today. Its pretty much the same story as the other side ,but on the drivers side I decided to cut the apron panel out for clearance for the flex hose if I ever decide to run a carb setup. I seen some pics of the factory race cars and really didn't like how it was done ,so since this isn't a clone I decided to use my imagination and still maintain some of the original stamping on the panels.I shortened the top one up a lot.Let me know what u think !! Well heres some before and afters ...Enjoy the pics....Jim
Jim;looks good and solid too! I think it looks cleaner than the 'Factory' way they cut out the panel!! ROY.
Just another quick update this sunday. Cut out and replaced some spots where the the apron panels were layered over each other and puckered from the rust between them . Each side right above the shock tower and where the apron panel meets the firewall. Nothing real noticeable but the kinda lil shit that needed done before you can move on to other stuff. With these spots fixed all the repair work in the front is done....finally!!!! Enjoy some before and after pics ...Jim
Another update with pics... This week I fixed the floor sections that were rotted out were the brace underneath met the floor. The brace ran from the inner rocker panel to the tunnel. So first up was to recreate this piece using a 2x4 cut to the same shape. The pics will show the steps the flat piece of steel took to become the brace...Enjoy the pics...Jim
Next was onto the floor board section... Since I dont have any fancy tools to speak of I kinda come up with my own way of getting things done.I found some scraps of steel laying around and used them and a chunk of steel as a stamp. This was rather easy compared to the brace..lol .So heres some pics of that gettin done, just needs finish welded and somooth'd up ..Enjoy the pics....Jim
