    Hello All,

I have a tech question and I'm looking for some input. I have a 1930 Coupe and looking to do a "heart transplant". I have a 8BA V-8 and want to run a F-1 1/2 ton Cross Member (much cheaper than a 32!). I have a lead on a 47-48 Trans and Banjo Rearend. Why do you not hear about people using these tranny's? I always hear about running a 37-39 tranny. If the X-Member is is coming out of a 48, why not use the tranny and rearend too? I know it's an open drive tranny and the Banjo will need to be cut down. I was thinking about 9" axles and cut the rear end down to fit. What am I up against here, or what I'm I missing? Thoughts?

    Thanks! Chris

'47-'48 CAR trans has essentially the same gearset as a '39, but the '39 has the "MORE-preferred" top shifter (stick), where-as the '40-'48 trans is "side-shifted" (column-shifter). Now, you say "it's an open drive tranny". That indicates '42-'48 pick-up trans, which should be essentially the same as a '39, with a straighter stick shifter, and open drive. Good trans to use! I'm building a 29 rpu. 47 pickup flathead open drive trans and rearend. Other than making some radius rods to keep the rear end from from spinning i don't forsee any problems.

I just modified a 42-48 F1 trans crossmember for my A pickup. 37-41 rear converted to open drive with 42-48 center section and 39 trans converted to open drive. If done right I think they are great. you have to move the clutch/brake pedals over also. There is also a torque tube/closed drive trans rear bearing retainer/trans mount that will work with this crossmember. Here are some pics

I'm working on this long time problem of keeping the rods from twisting/breaking when using an open drive rear and stock rear radius rods right now. I think I have the answer. I will post it in my build thread when it is together.

Thanks all! So I have the 8ba, 39 trans, 39 or40 rear end, and a lead on a 1/2ton F1 x-member. As soon as we secure all the parts, or the big ones, I will post pics of the tear down and build up!

    Thx again!
