You can check for power at ignition coil with key in the on position.

Check the ballast resistor. Make sure it is not burnt out.

sounds like your loosing the power to the coil when you let off the key, switch could be bad, try running a live wire from the battery right to the coil, if you have a toggle switch laying around stick that in the wire so if it does run you can turn it off easy.

Are you saying it runs in the starter position.Try running a jumper wire from bat to ign coil direct.

Like whats been said, run a check to see if it's the old switch not hold power when in just run,not start.
If it has been updated to 12volts in the p***?,it maybe the 50watt res. gone bad, they are used to drop to 6v in run,but is by p***ed when starter is running and coil gets 12v on updated to 12 volt set ups.

Chunk, could be low compression. have you checked?? it comes to mind because we did that once:mad: every thing was working as should but it would die as soon as you let off the starter. comp. test showed 2 dead holes and the others VERY low.

Could be fouled up spark plugs, could be low compression. Have you been trying to start it a lot and pumped a lot of gas down the intake?

Take the plugs out and have a look. If they are fouled with gas sandblast them, shoot some oil down the cylinders and try again. If it starts let it run at fast idle until it burns off the excess gas and oil. This may smoke a bit.

Ever hear it run? OK The dist I think going in one way. Get in middle of movement and see what way the rotor turns.Get TDC mark on pulley up front.Take cap off and mark side of dist That will be Number 1 go in dirrrection of rotor next is 5,3,6.2,4.
You could be out 180 degs. Now is this 6 volts thats pos ground.
Do you have 6 volt coil jumper to neg post battery.Put some gas down carb and start it.Make sure you have a good condenser and points gaped.number 1 is to front of engine.
If you have 12 volts you need a 12 volt coil and matching resister.jumper from resister to pos.12 volt will be neg grd.
You may have to move dist some.

Maybe the points burned if they were closed with the wire attached and engine not cranking.

  14. check ignition switch, it will have letters by the posts, make sure the one that has an "I" goes to coil. or check the switch in general to make sure its contacts are good, try a jumper wire from batt to coil and see if it stays running.
edit: I should read the whole thread before posting :)

+1. The car shouldn't have a ballast resistor unless someone has changed it to 12V but it looks like either the wire between the Ign post on the switch and the Ign post on the coil is bad or the switch is bad.

    1. turn the key to on and check to see if you have power to the coil. If you don't check to see if there is power at the ign post on the switch with the key on.

No power at the switch= switch bad.
Power at the Ign pin when the key is on = bad wire or connection between the switch and the coil.
