I'm thinking about running a set of Astro Supremes on a 60 cadillac. Some have told me the car is too heavy (4850lbs) for Supremes. Any expeirences or thoughts?

Astro Supremes usta crack if ya bottomed out or hit a chuck hole.
Ya gotta rmrmber...They were used for cruising across town at maybe 45 mph tops. and still guys would break them...But they LOOK the KOOLEST!!

I heard there are two companies making supreme look-alikes now and one is just ok and the other is ****.

Put some Caddy chrome wires on the Caddy. :D

I have a buddy that has them on a 60's Caddy and he has had no problems with them. He drives well over 90mph all the time and hasn't had one explode on him yet.

There's a mid-60's Cad around here that runs em. Looks good, and if I ever get close enough to it they're gonna disappear....

  6. I had a 66 Cad with some old true spokes on it and they held up fine! Everyone I met said that the car was to heavy! I wanted supremes because I thought they were stronger man I wish I still had that thing! I know that 66 was heavy as hell! I would beleive these guys if they say that yours is to heavy!

I got a set made by Allied Wheel Company that seems pretty stout FWIW. They are going on the lander though and I have not run them yet.

I don't know which one ****s or even if they do. May just be a internet rumor!
I'm going to run them on my '60 Elky, and it ain't no lightweight!
Just keep an eye on them and listen for clicking or creaking on turns, that's all.
When I was working for an Olds dealer a guy came in with some aftermarket chrome wires on a '74 Olds 98 coupe. He had this "clicking noise" on turns.
The right front wheel only had four spokes on the inner ring of spokes that WEREN'T broken!
Supremes usta crack at the weld between the rim and spoke.
You have to take them off to clean the BLACK brake drums anyway, so inspect them...
I saw about a 15 year old Caddy on the 605 freeway a month ago, doing 70-80mph with a breaking out rear wire wheel flip flopping around like a soft pretzel. and he was bouncing the front hydraulics! We stayed way clear....
But then,I've seen Coupe Devilles running four chromed space saver spares too.
Yes Tinseltown, California IS the land of fruits and nuts... :D

  11. Something like this perhaps? My old car with Astros, had no trouble except a little rust as I live near the ocean......And I liked to drive this car FAST.......

my buddy runs em' on a 63' bel air 4 door. No problems. They're for sale actually...I think. So is the bel air.

    $900 no drivetrain. cracked frame...fixable.

  13. Good friend of mine runs them on his 65 Rivi, had 2 crack on him years back

ok i typed a long response to this earlier and the board would not take my reply(who knows why) here is the smaller summary:
US Wheel Co version- complete and utter **** quality. they are the one's that
are cracking on folks. do not buy them. cheap for a
reason at about 80-100 each usually.

Allied Wheel Co version- pretty good quality. far superior to the us wheel piles
of dog****. most tire stores can get them for you
directly from Allied. i think most folks say your local
tire and wheel guy can get you these for 100-125
    which ain't bad.
Imperial Wheel Co version- this guy owns all the orginal molds dies and bla bla
bla as well as the rights to the wells. he
purchased everything from the original guys
family after his death. he has them made by Allied
but his have extra bracing in the spokes for
strenght. i think shipping and all i've got about
750 in mine from him. caps lugs and all.

now with that said i've had this set on my buick for about 5 years or so with no problems other than UPS bent the lip on one when they were shipped. you could tell by the box they were dropped hard. maybe thrown down. went through the inner and other boxes and the foam padding on the lip but only left a slight tweak. made me think they were plenty strong as both boxes were very thick cardboard. thatbeing said next time i'll probably order a set from allied just to see how much difference there is. i'm actually taking the set off my buick when i find a set of skylark wires or tru spokes to replace them.

as for weight my '64 wildcat ain't much smaller than that caddy so i'd see no problems. i will say however that most i have seen fail are on juiced cars that generally take a pretty hard beating. hope this helps answer your questions. whatever you do don't by the US Wheel ones...ken....

    Key words, "years back"

They should be made now to not crack or go bad like they did back in the day. Technology is a lot better now. I wouldn't worry about it.

im interested. is US wheel also known as Pacer? i saw where Pacer has a re-pop of these wheels, but i was thinking that they were all one continuous casting, not some two-piece deal. i love the looks of them, but im just like the rest, somewhat terrified to try them. i had a set of the originals in 14 x 7 form, and was always scared to try them. it was a weird construction of like a steel outer rim (chromed) welded or brazed to an aluminum/magnesium center. i just chocked them up as being one of those "bad old idea" things. so i sold them to a more adventurous guy.

i put my 25 year old 13x7 supremes on my bel-air and hop it 4 feet off the ground and havent broken a wheel yet..... i would trust a true set of astro wheels before i would the new pacer look alike supremes....

  20. My dad had some on the front of his '57 Chevy, when I was a kid.

Some guy stopped him and wanted to buy them. His son was killed when one broke apart, and he wanted them for testing, and a lawsuit.

He bought my dad a whole set of rims and tires for 'em.

Thanks for all of the information and thoughts on the Astro Supremes. I'm torn right now between Astros or true Caddy or Buick wires.

I have a set of the PACER Supremes on my 1960 Pontiac and a friend of mine has the Pacer Astro´s on a 1954 Chevy. I drove about 2500km this year, most of the time on the Autobahn with about 90mph...no problems. But I would be very, very interested if this Pacer supremes are the same like the US WHEEL Co. Astro´s? The problem is, over here in germany it´s pretty bad to get Supremes...the ceapest way is to import them from Great Britain "North Hants Tyres"...and they just have the PACER Astro Supremes. They cost about 800 Euro with shipping over her...
