Thought I'd throw up a thread on the build of my 36 Dodge pickup. It was started by a previous owner as a rat rod, but I'm slowly undoing the **** they did to make it look more right. They had welded the cab sub-frame to the main frame, I cut it loose and slid it back a bit to get better lines. The pic of it on the gr*** is the way it was the day I got it, the pic behind the house is the way it sits now. I think it looks better with the grill shell not sticking out past the front tires. I chopped the grill shell stands about 2" to get it to sit where it is now. I'm working on the cab mounts right now, when I get the cab secured, it goes under the carport to install the motor and transmission and build the mounts for them. Then I will hang a brake pedal and MC, and start on the cab floor. This is it for now, will update as progress is made.... The day I got her home After sliding the cab back Much better, you think?
Remember, you asked! Don't know, that 36 Dodge would have had leaf springs under the front axle. Where it was originally sat was more "right" in my eyes. Also, that nose looks pretty long to me? If you leave it where its sitting now, what are you going to do with the steering box hanging in front of the grill shell? What frame is it on? The independent suspension looks out of place if your not covering it with fenders. Your truck, do with it as you please, but I thought it looked better before. Gene
I wish it had the original frame, but it's long gone. The po mounted the cab to a Toyo pickup frame. It is what it is. The steering is an eyesore, I agree. I may try to find a r&p that will fit low, under and behind the shell, or, since the steering arms bolt on, reverse them and do a Vega style cross steering. Still doing my research on that. As for the length, where the cab was before was centered on the frame. The bed box would have had to have been right at 6' long, and looking from the side, I thought it would have made the whole truck look too long with the chop and channel on it. Now I can use a bed slightly less than 5', and it will have the long front, bobbed rear look. That's why I asked, I value the thoughts of those here on the HAMB. This is my first 30's build, and I want it to be right.
That ch***is looks alot like a mid 80's Dodge D50 ch***is also. As you mentioned, you could could always change the steering box to a Vega or something. The nose has to stay long or you will have firewall problems from what I remember.
Good thing your changing it to a decent car. Hate this stupid and unsafe r#t rod movement. looking forward to some progress. nose looks good imho
You are to be congratulated on letting this vehicle rise from the ashes. I would like to say that from your first post on this truck I think you have an eye for the lines this truck needs to take. I am also going to say that you are the "creator" and as long as you enjoy what you are doing to this truck it is more than O.K. with me and should be with anyone. Beauty is in the eye of the builder, not in the beholden. Waiting for more.
Picked up a set of 86 Corvette seats yesterday for it. Will have to lose the tracks to get them low enough to see out the windsheild! Not much else to show, weather hasn't been fitting to do much. They will get new black covers when the time comes. Temp floor is a piece of 3/4 plywood. Steel floor coming as soon as I can get the motor/****** mocked in.
If you're plan is to keep it looking old school, it's a bit hard to envision those seats fitting in. I prefer the look of a bench seat in old trucks. But if you're going to do a modern looking hot rod out of it, then I could see those seats in there.
Going for a mix of old style and newer street rod, without the billet. I want it to be comfortable enough to drive long trips without killing my old body. Benches and bomber seats are cool, but I don't have enough padding on my *** to ride on either for a long period of time. Maybe it's not old style enough for some, but I don't exactly have a stash of flatheads or early Hemi's laying around. I make do with what I can find......CHEAP!!!!!
any progress? I'm a new owner of 36 dodge truck myself, would like to see what other people are doing
Nothing lately. Holidays and weather have me slowed down a bit. Supposed to be nice this weekend, maybe i can get started back on it.
damn military computers blocking the images for some reason. but if its the same ride as your avatar i think it looks good so far. i like the bobbed beds better then long ones, not like your going to take it to home depot and load up some plywood.
