So we just got the motor in my buddys galaxie. 302 SBF. He bought a water pump from a fella that has the outlet on the p***enger side like a sbc. We're trying to run a single v belt to run the water pump and alternator, but its kickin our ***es (mine mostly). Heres what we have. These are the billet pulleys that came from someone on here. Heres the same lower pully with a 68' Ford pulley. As you can see, we're 5/8 to 3/4 off. After some looking, it appears that the 289 had a shorter harmonic balancer. Would a 289 harmonic balancer help us any? I know that some were 3 bold and some were 4. I just need a ford guy to point me in the right direction. The 302 is from a 78 ford mustang. Help !
You can interchange the 3- bolt and 4- bolt damper on that engine. The big center hole is what it pilots off of. You can redrill the other mounting bolt pattern into the crank pulley you use fairly easily. For example if you use the 3- bolt pulley on the 4- bolt damper simply make a drilling template (I use yellow file folders) from the damper lay it on the lower pulley to be modified, offset the holes and have at it. It will run perfect because of that machined center hole.
I think there are 2 different water pumps, one is cast iron the other is aluminum, that are different lengths. I am not sure what other differences there are between the pumps, other than the length.
I just finally gave up and I ordered some from cvrracing.com talked with nate told him what I had and he told me what to order 119.00 total. Got tired of searching everywhere.
balance is thicker on that one than what your pulleys are for... that crank pulley is for a 1980s 302 balancer.....
If the pulleys are not touching you can keep your pulleys in the first photo and order some spacers from Jegs. HRP http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stor...3+1147708&searchTerm=WATER+PUMP+PULLEY+SPACER
Good luck with it. I hate SBF's cause of it. There are so many different combo's on Fords it's crazy. They must have made a different set up for each day of the week. We found the only way to deal with it is get everything off of the same vehicle. We had no luck with aftermarket. Clark
We're getting quite the impressive pulley collection though. Looks like the spacers are gonna be the easist and cheapest option.
sorry cvfracing.com and from looking at tthe pictures that stock balancer might be the problem my balancer is aftermarket and does not have the spacer mine if all flush and is the 3/4 difference. so you might consider going to a new balancer and use your pulleys just my 2cents
I have that same mustang engine in my rpu.Mine from the factory has a dual pulley. The upper is deeper dished than what you have there. Water pump outlet is on the left side as well. I don't know what you have there. First pic is how i got it when i bought the rpu back in 09. Cleaned it up since. Second pic is fresh 30 years ago yet to be installed.
There are a couple of differnt sizes and weights to 289/302 balancers. The Mustangs with the Hi Po motor got a smaller damper than the standard cars. Then in 1970 Ford changed the pulley design and required a different damper which also turned out ot be about 3 lbs heavier. All of these still had the 28 oz imbalance so they are all interchangeable. They just require different pulley set ups. As for water pumps, those made before 3/14/76 had a 5 3/8" hub height and those made after 3/15/76 had a 5 3/4" hub height - these are approximate and some folks claim there are ones that are 5 13/16 and 5 9/16" as well. The 289 K code Mustang that had the little balancer used a pump that was 5 1/16" so naturally all of these combinations used different pulley's Oh yeah, i forgot - some dampers had a lip on them to locate the pulley and others the pulley had the lip, so you have to watch out for that too. And none of this applies to the later motors with the 50oz balance
I don't know what crank balancer you have there but it is not an early 289/302. Ford small blocks have always had some issues when changing to billet pulleys, but the pulleys were never to long. They, if anything were to short, and that is why there was always a spacer in the crank pulley kit, to space the crank pulley out to match the water pump pulley. I've got a couple of stock 289 crank pulleys if you need one, just pay shipping and a few bucks for handling. BOutlaw
here is a picture of the pulley set up I just got from cvfracing. remember its an aftermarket balancer I have .
