Hello everyone, I have just joined the group at a suggestion from the guys over at streetrodding.com. I have a question regarding the front sump on a 1957 Ford Y block. I have a customer that wants me to install it into a 1952 Mercury. I can see that the front sump is going to be a problem. I have been told that the pan from a pickup engine of that year has a rear sump. Do you know if that is true? The oil pump on this engine is external to the block, so it looks like it wouldn't be too hard to change where the pickup tube goes.
Although have a '57 Tbird of my own, I am not really that familiar with this type of engine. Any advice will be appreciated.

    Thanks, Lanny (bubbashead)
p.s. all the good names were taken, so i had to settle for this one.

Your T Bird also uses a rear sump pan.Different than the trucks however.

I am under the impression that there are two rear sump truck oil pan types along with the rear sump T Bird.Total of 3 pans to choose from.

I believe the truck pans difference is in the way they are baffled. One is baffled and one is not baffled.

The truck pan should also have the corrct oil pickup tube. Dont overtighten the big nut.

Here's a photo of mine,....it's off a 292 from a '61 F-300, just one example of a pan that might work for you.

Replaceing a flathead with a yblock the dist is going to hit fire wall.A 302 would be a better choice.
Now for the y block you will need and truck oil pan, timing cover, and oil pickup tube.
