I have a perplexing question for all in the know. I want to replace the worn,:) off-shore Vega box in my 36 with a 525 out of an 88 S-10. I really hate to tear my column out and modify it so would it be possible to cut the long input shaft down and machine a double D on the end instead of the 3/4 x 30 spline? This would keep the input shaft in about the same spot as the vega and allow me to just replace the u-joint. I know that they sell new boxes with the short input but I already have a like new box that didnt cost anything. if not possible, I guess I will have to pull the column and shorten that. Thanks, Mitch.:)

  2. I see no reason why you couldn't, I did a similar thing when I put a different column in a 53 Chevy. Cut the shaft at the length I wanted and used a grinder to get it close then hand shaped it the rest of the way.

I've done just that as above with hand tools, hacksaw, grinder, files, works out great.

Is the diameter of the 525 box shaft at least 3/4" ? If so, then yes you can.
I have done it on a different box, but i put it in the mill to get good parallel flat surfaces that were a snug fit to the U Joint
