Well, i sold my 223 out of my 58 ford last week, so starting tonight i am going to start the 302 swap. What i have is a 1 piece rear main 302 long block (1984 i believe) its not a roller motor. It is fairly clean inside so i am just changing oil pump, pickup, timing, and all gaskets and throwing it in with the stock 3 speed. At the same time i am changing my rear gears from 3.50 to 3.00s so the rpms will be more sane until i find a t5. I will do***ent as much of this part of the build as possible if there is any interest. I will give as many part numbers as i can also as far as serp belt, which ignition parts (eec4 conversion) and everything else (mounts, etc) any questions or comments, please feel free!

My brother done this swap in a 63 galaxie and he used the motor mounts from a 64 289. They fit down on the 223 frame mounts with no mods...at least on the 63...we will see if its the same for a 58, cuz thats what i bought. I will know hopefully sunday

Ok, spent 45 minutes on it today... Went from a driver

To ready to pull the motor(all thats left are 2 bellhousing bolts)

with just a few basic hand tools!

So, i guess this is my first build thread, please bear with me as i am going to have some questions when i get to my charging system. Not bad for less than an hours work . Hopefully i will be able to set the 302 in it this weekend.

Ok, i just ordered a dual resevoir master cylinder also (may as well change it while access is easy to the lines), 1st question...what proportioning valve do i need? I am staying with drum brakes front and rear (for now), the m c i bought is for a 68 drum/drum mustang...but i am having a hard time finding the prop valve. Is an aftermarket adjustible ok?

I did a dual reservoir on mine. The MC was for a late-1960s Galaxie or Custom. I am still using drums like you. You don't meed a proportioning valve for a 4 drum system. I did add a Galaxie pressure differential valve, the H-shaped thing with the warning light switch.

If you want new, just get one for a Mustang. From the factory manual:

Ok, i have the 223 out and am getting the 302 cleaned and ready for the install (hopefully this weekend)
Question...the 302 is an 84, i am running 3 speed stick from a 63 Galaxie...the 223 clutch will not fit the 302 flywheel...do i use an 84 clutch? The input shaft is 10 spline. What i am worried about is the stang had i believe, a cable or hyd clutch, and i am staying with mechanical...any problems with this. Thanks y'all!

Cant tell in the pic, but the 302 had a recent (20k mile) overhaul. It just leaked like crazy cause the p.o. Liked silicone more than gaskets! Heads are in the shop getting redone, just cleaning up the rest and backdating the look.

Ok, got the heads back from the shop today. Got master cylinder and distribution block from a 70 drum/drum mustang givin to me. Bought my clutch also, was all set to put the 302 in this weekend, and was informed i am working saturday and sunday, so maybe next weekend. I am trying my hardest NOT to get carried away and pull the dash for paint while its down. So, basically gonna be a few days before i get to touch it again.

Ok, i got the heads back for my 302, got them installed and my engine is now painted (vht metallic gold). I found the bellhousing i planned on using so i could keep my 3 speed had the wrong trans bolt patten, so i drilled and tapped the correct pattern in it. I had a spare 3 speed from an early 70s ford truck which has both early and late bolt pattern. I mounted the trans to the bellhousing using the late pattern and drilled the 4 holes where i needed them then i removed the trans and tapped them. Worked out pretty well, but after i was finished with that my wife mentioned she would prefer an automatic so i will be using an aod i guess. Not much of an update but still, not bad i guess.

Thanks for this build and all the updates. I just bought a 59 Ranch wagon and will be doing just about everything your doing to yours. I'm keeping the stick shift though. I saw another build that the guy used 73 Galaxie disk brakes. He said the spindles were a direct bolt on.

What i have gathered so far:
    1984 302 (1 piece rear main/non roller)

Oil pan, pump, pick up for 1968 torino with a 302

Motor mounts for 68 torino 302

1985 aod trans from a grand marquis

Swapping 3.50 rear gears for 3.00s.

Serp belt system for 84 stang.

Still need to get an early non egr 2 barrel intake.

As for the brakes, i have a new m/c for a 69 stang and a distribution block for a 70 stang. I am going to stay with drums for now till i can afford 4 wheel disc.

I could see the advantage of painting the firewall @ this point, but the dash?

I am painting the firewall and frame, the reason the dash is mentioned is because all the interior has been repainted except the dash. It is still stock gray. While i have down time waiting on parts, i keep considering pulling the dash so my interior is finished. But i tend to get carried away, i know if i pull the dash, next is carpet to insulate better, than door panels to insulate doors, etc...

    This looks like fun!

I'd be tempted to drive it with the 3.50's now that you are mandated :D to use the auto. I've had several rigs with the .67 top ratio AOD and from 2.73-3.55 rear gears. With a 302 I would prefer something in the 3.27-3.55 range so you might already have a near perfect setup.

Concur with Faster7. I have two cars with AODs; both run deeper gears than 3.50, and work really well. Your '58 will have a plenty tall high gear with the 3.50 rear. 3.50 * .67 is about 2.33 in fourth. This gear, with a 27 inch tire, translates to about 2600 rpm at 90 mph. With your gross weight of more than 3000 lbs, I wouldn't go taller than that.

I used to run a 63 Galaxie with a 302, aod and 3.0 gear with a 27" tire and pulled 22 on the interstate everyday. My 58 is lighter, and has a 25.5" tire. I will be leaving the 3.50 gears for a while, but most likely will change them later. 90% of my driving is interstate is why i was wanting to swap, but im thinking you guys may be right. Just hafta wait and decide later. Thanks for the imput!

Ok, i finally got around to painting the frame and firewall satin black the other day, the 302 is painted, just waiting on my intake to deslime (its in the hot tank at my brothers shop). Picked up the aod this morning, so hopefully get it all sat together next week . I took a 4 day weekend next week to work on it. Any body here have an extra b&m install kit #40496? to install a z gate shifter to an aod.

FINALLY!!! she has a heart! Ok, i tried using 67 302 stang motor mounts, but the stud ended up in front of the stock frame mounts, and i planned to just weld a plate and drill some holes for the studs to slip through. Didnt work! Couldnt get the starter in due to the steering linkage. I threw the 79 stang mounts back on my block and they slipped right in the stock frame mounts! Next i crawled back under to check the trans mount, and it appeared i would have to shim the stock trans mount almost an inch to get everything level. I had a replacement trans mount for my 2000 f150 with an auto, i compared the 2 mounts and the truck trans mount was almost an inch taller, so i slapped it in and everything bolted in perfect. I even scrounged my dads collection and found a driveshaft that fit perfect! Also the stock 84 stang exhaust manifolds clear great too. So parts wise:
    1984 302
1968 mustang oil pan, pump, and
    pick up
    1984 mustang motor mounts
    2000 f150 auto trans mount
    1984 mustang exhaust manifolds
    Trans crossmember in stock location
    No mods to frame mounts

    The pics show everything installed

Next step is swapping the master cylinder for a dual resevoir before hanging the frontend. Hopefully one night this week.

After 4 months i am able to get working on her again:) finished up a few small jobs the other night...intake is on, gotta buy a base gasket for the carb. I figured i would go ahead and throw on the alternator and serpentine setup from the mustang. That didnt work so well! The idler and the 1 piece aluminum mount are directly in front of the top radiator hose opening...always something! So i am going after the pulleys and alt mount from a 73 f150 this weekend. Not much of an update, but im glad to finally be working on it again!
