Just picked up this 1955 Airstream wanderer 18'. It's been gutted. I need to change the running and brake lights. may rebuild with a charles eames or Pierre Koenig inspired 50's modernist interior.
WOW...nice score. The outside looks like it's in great condition. Short enough to tow behind a hot rod or custom, but big enough to spread out! Got any pics of the gutted interior? You should post these and more, on the camper thread that's already going...
Welcome to the crazy world of travel trailers. Shameless plug, but check out my build on http://theadventuresofavalair.blogspot.com/ I'd blog your progress, that way other people can follow along. It makes it easy to show your family what you have been doing, plus it gives you a place to look back on how far you have come.
Oh man! My hearts goin'pitty-pat'. I luurve these things, and yours is a cl***ic. To also consider a period correct design cl***ic interior is most worthy, and I am so jealous. Please keep us posted on your progress, I'd really like to see a cl***ic piece of interior design in one of these. My dream is to take a holiday in the U.S buy one of these (and a cl***ic car) and drive the combo all over the place, buying up old motorbikes along the way. When the holiday is done, gut the interior, fill it chocka-block full of cl***ic motorcycles, and ship the lot back to OZ.
cool score! i had a 60's airstream and their is a pretty imformative website about them plus tech articles.
I don't know yet, but the tongue can be moved around by hand. and the truck pulls it like nothing's there.
I have no idea who those guys you mentioned are, but the Airstream is the perfect size and looks to be in great shape. X2 on the interior pics.
Weight it before you tow with a hot rod or custom they are not as light as they look. They weigh quite a bit more once you put an interior in plus food water and appliances. Have fun they are worth it. Sent from chick's iPad using TJJ
Check out airforums.com. There's a lot of vintage AS owners there as well as guys towing AS's with hot rods.
Great trailer. Looks like your unit will weigh in at 2130lbs dry. Here's a link you might want to check out. http://vintageairstream.com/archives1/54Wanderer/index.html </PRE> I have a '65 Globetrotter 19 footer and it tows great. I hook my '58 Lonestar Malibu behind it and tow with my 1/2 ton GMC at 70 mph with the cruise on!
On that (Nose) Pickers show, IIRC, they were thinkin in the $14,000 range??? Is that a true # or just tv ********?
Cool! I have a 59' Yellowstone 14' that is laid out real nice inside. I plan to finish the outside and sell it because I have dins on a 53' 16' Jetstream (air stream copy cat). We want to pull ours behind the 57' F100 this spring.
Looks good. I just restored a Shasta compact with my wife and it was one of the funnest build I have ever done.
cool trailer,i too have a 1962 19 ft airstream globetrotter, all original.the ad for the 62 globetrotter, actually featured a guy polling the trailer on a bicycle.what makes the older trailers cool is the pleats.try some nuvite on a cyclo dual head airplane wing polisher, thats what mine is lookiing like. wayne blown 33 ford roadster, red at that!
i tow mine behind a 98 gmc ,with one of those weak overdrives, all over ca ,to arizona tehatchepy, never any problem,120k miles and no trans fluid discoloration, clutch pack material,or anything in there from towing, never even know its back there.one good upgrade, was going to electric brakes.
I love these trailers, see the one I have listed for a friend in the cl***ifieds, misc. for sale section. It could be very cool with a little tlc. ~sololobo~
