Is this an F1 steering box. I thought these things were supposed to be small and therefore simple to use in a hotrod build. This one seems large to me. Maybe it's for an F100 of something larger.

yes sir, thats an f1. looks like someone already modified it to fit in a model a frame.
they cut off one of the ears of the flange. mines the same, then they tapped a new hole closer to the shaft. they dont look so big sunk into the frame.

That looks like an F1, I put one in mine, used the tardel method ,using a model A flange welded to the F1 box worked great. Also bolted a A flange on the outside to help in supporting box.

Thanks, that's good to hear. One of the ears was cut off. It does fit flush in my Model A frame rail because of that ear cut off.

a f100 box is actually smaller but the shaft comes into the top of the box instead of the bottom like the f1 does. I think thats why so many people use a f1 box. both are very nice though

After further research and head scratching, I decided this isn’t a F1 steering box. At least it’s not the 1940-52 box that everyone likes to use. The sector shaft is a lot larger than the shaft in the 1937-48 cross steering box. These are supposed to be the same part and interchangeable in the F1 box and p***enger car box. I tried to install this box on my 1937 column and but as you can see from the pictures it was a different size. Another indication that this isn’t an F1 is the part number I found (34587). I think this box is for the F4 to F6.
