Started on the wiring of my 51. Looking at the instruction on the kit it shows to use either the ballast in line before the coil (normal distributor) or to wire directly to a HEI. When I was taking the wiring out of the car i noticed there was no ballast so I got looking at the dist (its still a 235) and noticed it was electronic (converted I believe) and if i remember correctly, you do not need a ballast with a pertronix set up. The two wires shown go directly to the coil (one + side and one to the - side). and when running the wire from the ignition switch it goes directly to the coil, (no ballast)
if it's a GM it might have a resistor wire instead of a conventional ballast resistor. i think the condenser is deleted, not the ballast resistor on a hall sensor ignition.
Correct. 12v to the Pertronix but the 12 volt supply to the coil should have a series resistor to limit current.
Yes, not throw it away. OR AT LEAST carry a back up set of points in your glove box, cause when they **** the bed your done. Careful not to leave the key on too, that will fry it.
the car was converted to 12v before I got it, but it was a very poor job. which is why I am rewiring the car. Right now the red is going to + side of Coil, back to the - side of coil. From what I can tell in the American Auto Wire Kit instruction, I will use a the Pink wire from the "IGN" on the ignition switch to the Coil and I do not have to put a ballast in the line (there is no ballast now). http://74.8.159.74:8081/recordlist.php its the Ign switch & Starter Kit, catalog 500703.
When in doubt use the Pertronix 1-800 tech line. They will answer everything you need to know and for a lot less $$$ than replacing it after everyone stops guessing what you have. Some do use a ballest, odds are yours don't since there isn't one there now. Do you feel lucky? The Wizzard
