My avatar came with an electric Cl***ic Instruments (CI) speedometer. Dangling off the firewall is this gizmo the speedo cable screws into. It is basically round in shape and has two wires that go to the wire harness. Is it suppose to be mounted in something? Is it a Ford part? The avatar originally had a 289/C4 the seller removed. I installed a Ford 302/AOD. I emailed CI and CI only stated it was a Ford speedo cable going to it, and CI did not comment or ID the gizmo/adaptor. I imagine it reads the revolutions of the speedo cable and sends a signal to the speedo. Anyone know how this gizmo was secured/mounted?
It's a speed sensor, apparently it's not mounted at all. That won't keep it from working, it just makes it look bad, if you happen to look under the dash. You could clamp the speedo cable to something and make it more secure, if you want. The speedometer cable at that end looks like the old 5/8" thread used on the speedometer on most makes of cars until the mid-late 60s. The sensor does look like it could be an old Ford unit, but you didn't show us the back side where the numbers are, so we can't be sure. They are also available from the aftermarket. and they come in different flavors, usually 4000 or 8000 pulses per mile (the standard for speedometers is 1000 revolutions per mile, so there would be 4 or 8 poles in the sender)
Squirrel, The speedo cable is from a TKO600 Tremec sent me for another build. The speedo adaptor has no numbers, which leads me to believe it is not a Ford part. Ford has a habit of putting numbers on everything. Here's a pic of the back.
The reason I thought it might be an old OEM part is that it looks old, and those things weren't commonly used in aftermarket stuff until more recently. Also the cruise speed sensors usually have threads on both sides, so you can put it in line with the speedometer cable that still goes to the speedo. Interesting part, I suppose it's fun to worry about it, but if the speedo works, I would just secure it and be done with it. If it doesn't work, then see if you can find a new sensor from the speedometer company.
Hello, what you have is a 8 pulse Pulse generator (Two wire) One wire will go to Ground other on Sender post back of Speedometer. (does not matter which wire goes where) It is hooked up to a cable that goes to your transmission, normally we will see this is the transmission is close to a frame rail. We have other adapters that will work, or we can hook direct to transmission (IF you have room) If the unit is working fine, you do not need to change a thing, but I would strongly recommend sucuring the cable and Pulse Generator. If you need anything, feel free to call me at 1-800-575-0461 Best, John
Thanks everyone for the input. My avatar has the Cl***ic Instrument's six gauge "Vintage Series" set. It has been seven years since they last operated. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
