Sounds like it wasn't restored to flyable. Glad the pilot walked away and that he didn't hit any inocents.
On a related note (WWII fighter planes), here is a GREAT short video with an ending that surprised me! Dogfighting over Ireland, crank the sound!! http://biggeekdad.com/2011/11/the-german/
I love to see these warbirds fly and I know the risks...but it still makes me feel kinda sick when I hear about one getting damaged or destroyed..
Now that was really cool too. Too bad the plane crashed but I'm sure it's not done for. Grandpa flew F4u Corsairs and sb2c helldivers.
She'll fly again. These old birds are tough and it's amazing the lengths that are taken to get them flying. I'm glad there are those of means that make it their life's work to keep them airworthy. Frank
I worked for Rockwell on the Shuttle program 20 years ago and they HAD been "North American Aviation" in WWII. The company bought a P40 and literally took it down to EVERY nut off of every bolt, they brought in long retired former mechanics then in their late 70's and 80's (This was the early 80's) and they rebuilt that bird to better than it ever was. Painted it gold and had a corporate pilot whose ONLY job was to fly it to and from airshows. Those things are flying sculpture.
