I really want to buy this car in Oklahoma and I am in the Detroit area. The quote today I got from a national chain was 950.00, I cannot afford anything over 500, am I screwed here. I had a car hauled to me from L.A. and it was 950, why the same price for almost 1000 less miles? Anybody got room that is making a trip this way???

Well it might be because it isn't cheap to drive 1000+ miles one way pulling a trailer.

Just driving my truck minus a trailer from Ok city to Detroit would take 347.09 worth of gas one way according to calculations.
If it runs and drives and can be driven up on a convoy truck you might find a better deal but I wouldn't expect it from and individual hauler unless you can find someone who is running empty one way or the other. Then you have to figure that Oklahoma is a big state and the car may be way to hell and gone off the beaten path.

Follow the advice in posts 2 & 3 to get honest no nonsense prices and good service.

transportation rates are not only dependant on mileage, but also on the ability to get loaded/reloaded on each end of the trip.

    best wishes

Oklahoma to Detroit for $950.00. That's a very decent rate. Sounds like you are asking people to work for free.

That sounds more then fair for external transport. Heck I pay 600-700 or so for sub 500 mile enclosed trips in California all the time.

Rick on the HAMB might, might, be up in that area about this time of the year.

BenD will be up here on Tuesday. Not sure where he's coming from or if he's got a full load. Call him and ask 417-818-0844

Call a guy named Jim Guinn in Justin Tx near the OK border. 940-389-8997 he picked up a 57 Pontiac here in Fort Worth & took it to Scottsdale Az for $600 I think. The guy I sold it to found him on the web at a site called U-Ship. Transporters bid on the haul there. Good Luck!

BenD quoted me $750 last week to haul a running, driving car from Texas to Tennessee, about 700 miles. I'd say $950 isn't unreasonable.

On top of fuel charges, etc. lots of these haulers pay as much as a third of the fee they get to 'brokers' who dispatch the cars.

    Truckers gotta eat too.

You can't rent a trailer and go get it yourself for $500. As you asked, yes you are screwed at $500. Not many haulers can stay in business long not making a profit.

  12. $950.00 is right in line for a fair price, my price would have been $985.00 from Oklahoma City, any further west or south & it would have been more

I had my car transported down from Georgia to Houston in 2009

I started with this site and picked from there

    http://www.transportreviews.com/dire...sttwoyears.asp

I used Domestic Transport and would use them again

You can put in an estimate for 3 of the top ones and see how much it is

Those reviews are based on people using the company's

I did from Oklahoma City to Waterford, Mi and got the below quotes

This is open carrier in running condition

The 5 is 5 stars on their rating system, amount to transport, and deposit (some are zero - some are more)

I am not affliated with any of these - just throwing the info out there. Domestic Auto Transport is 720.00 - it is in the higher end of the quotes (that is who i used)
    Good luck

I have seen transport companies commit to hauling a car...only online...then bail out a couple of weeks later.

I guess they were trying to make certain they had the truck full, even at a discount rate, then discovered a better rate.

it can be a one-way street if you aren't careful who you choose

My truck was from Douglasville, Ga (that is what was on the truck and the driver told me he lived there too). The driver filled the truck partially up in Ga and then dropped off and picked up along the way. When he got to me 4-5 days after my car was picked up he made it to Houston with 4 cars still on it including mine. It seemed like a tough way to make a living...

Domestic Transport sub contracted it out to the Ga driver. It didn't have Domestic Transport anywhere on the rig. The driver did call my cell each day to tell me whe he was. It was funny because everywhere he gassed up he had people offer to buy the car :D

    If you're only $450 short of hiring a transporter and you REALLY want the car;

(as suggested) bus there, drive back IF it's driveable. I've found that sometimes a 2 hour flight is cheaper than a 2 day bus ticket. (what's your time worth?).

    Borrow $450

Sell $450 worth of parts from your stash

Pay the seller for the car with an agreement that he'll store it for free for two months while you locate a transporter (wrangle some more cash).

Be careful with the brokers.a buddy of mine bought a car on here and went through a broker to get it hauled. They quooted him 950 from Iowa to Florida. 3 months and many broken promises later he contacted another company and paid 1200 to get it here. He only paid 750 for the car

If you are on the turnpike from Oklahoma City to Joplin, MO (I-44), a four-axle vehicle (pickup + trailer) toll alone is $44.00...one-way!

That $950 you were quoted is pretty damn good. It's 1,025 miles from OKC to Detroit - that quote is less than a buck a mile! You can't go to OKC from Detroit and back for less than the flight there and the fuel, tolls, an overnight stay somewhere along the line, and your time for that. A bus ticket is damn near as much as a flight these days! And you want someone to haul for $500.00??? Really???

A bus ticket on Greyhound runs $228.00. A flight booked through Priceline on American runs $255.00. Both one way from DET to OKC.

A bus ticket, a thousand miles worth of fuel @15 mpg and $3.50/gallon, $22.00 for tolls in OK, one night hotel on the way home, and food & drink, and you are looking at $528.00, approximately. Add the $28.00 difference for the flight. Based on fuel average costs, decent fuel mileage, OK tolls, and a one-way refundable bus ticket from Detroit to OKC. Again, you want someone to haul this for $500.00???

Oh, BTW, I know Jim Guinn in Nocona, TX. I highly recommend you look into using his services! He is a one-man operation, does NOT work with brokers or dispatchers, is bonded and insured, he takes his time, and hauls your car like it is his own. Can't go wrong with him.
