Im gonna run this in my speedster. Bought it off ebay a while back, CHEAP. I'm just curious to what it came from. Eventually I will need to know so I can buy a speedo cable. Thanks
I agree...could be a generic. Unless someone else has a better insight to it. Jonnie King www.legends.thewwbc.net
I doubt a generic speedo would have the fancy bead on the bezel. It is the style of the 28-31 Ford As with the rotating barrel for speed, a mileage meter and a tripmeter. So the era would be pre-32 and likely a bigger car than a Ford. Now comes the search for the dash with a uniquely beaded rim speedo.
It came on some fancy car from the middle 20s into the 30s. I've never seen a universal speedo with a trip meter and the reset knob. There were so many makes back then that it may be hard to find exactly what it came in. It could be a "Sterns Knight" for all I know.
What # are on the Back.? and if you need a Cable NAPA wood be the Place to go, just have to match the Treads & Size & how long you want it just my 3.5 cents
The case or face part numbers would be of ***istance. It does not receive a "standard" speedometer cable. I wouldn't hook it up until it has been serviced. That unit may have a phenolic fiber first worm gear that needs proper lubrication. Also, the pot-metal frames tend to expand/contract/shift/break over the years. If things are out of alignment or seized, it will ruin itself or the cable in short order.
I'll get the #'s next time I'm in the shop. I doubt that anything is seized inside the gauge. I can flick the gauge with my wrist and get the speedo to roll pretty easily. The roller goes so fast I still don't know what top recorded speed is. I think I saw 80.
shaking the case. I can spin the shaft easily with my finger tips, but am not able to spin it fast enough to register anything.
The magnet shaft free rotation is the better indicator. The speedcup movement simply means that it, as a sub-***embly, is unobstructed.
