64 belair 250 inline six, Straight pipe or glasspack?

Hi there again guys, the hugh-mungo muffler is blown out on this car, its a 64 belair with a 250 six, would it be really obnoxious to run straight pipe on this thing? really loud and sound like ****?

Or would a gl***pack be better suited?

I dont have much expierience with the chevy 6 bangers,

well i got a 62 Starchief & have had both a strightpipe & a reg muffler & a gl*** pack on it last summer its real low so keep ripping it off & stright pipe was way to damn loud muffler made it way to quite & robbed a lot of power & gl***pack cherry bomb type made it right sound & didnt seam to rob power much buts its a 389 v8 6 cils sound great with a split manafold & dauls if you can do that but if just a muff go for a gl*** pack on a 6cil they sound wicked

 

What kind of sound are you wanting to get? I just ran a search for "exhaust" over on Inliners.org.

A gl*** pack on a stock system will lower the sound somewhat. A Flowmaster 40 w/ single in/dual out seems to sound like a mild V8.

Get some cast iron dual exhaust headers from Stovebolt Engine Co., then run one straight pipe, and one short gl*** pack as far forward as possible. You will be unbelievably obnoxious when you rap the pipes with this set-up.

I've got a 60 bel air with a 235 _ 6 in it and I got the exhaust running straight out the drivers side front fenderwell right behind the front tire with a gl***pack on it and its not that loud at all still ... sounds liek an old tractor pretty much

 

I think you can still get a header for that car...but not sure. If you can, run two pipes w/ one gl***pack'd and one straight. The concept sounds stupid, but the sound is really cool.

If you can't buy a header for it, I'm pretty sure your cast iron manifold can be split.

 

i know the manifold can be split my dad did it to many trucks in 60-70s just takes a good welder .......

 

Isn't it supposed to be a 230 in '64? Looks just like a 250. Or, maybe it was replaced.

 

ya, its got to be a post 67 250 somone put in the car becuase its still got a dissconnected air pump with a plastic pulley and lines are still plumbed into the head. I guess it wont be so bad once i get all that **** out of there, maybe it will have a lil more power then the stock 230.

 

Better run a gl***pack or 2. I had a straight 6 and with open exhaust it kinda sounds like a tractor. My friend has a 62 nova with a 6, and it has a split header, duals all the way back with gl***packs and it sounds *****in.

 

on my 216 i ran straight and it sounded nice. dumped it out in front of the rear tire

go with the gl*** packs. sounds great on a six.
