Found a 55 Cadillac series 62 project.Supposed to be very clean second owner car from Nevada. The guy pulled the 331 motor to rebuild bought pistons, rods, had hardened seats installed in the heads then ran out of enthusiasm. The idea of a clean straight old Caddy with a fresh motor starting to grow in me.
I have a '55 (with a "70 500" in it)...my brother has a '54 Series 62 hardtop with the stock 331" in it...we overhauled it, and the ****** three years ago...he gets 20-21 mpg on the hiway at 70 mph with it...the 331" are good engines. FWIW, the hardened seats in a Caddy engine wasn't necessary...Cadillac metal contains enuff nickle that it didn't need them... If you'd like to see the 5 year build on my '55, go here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=329070&highlight=the+best+55+caddy+build But be prepared to spend several hours reading a looking at pix... Post up some pix of the Caddy when you get it... R-
Spent several hours searching the forum and your build was one of the good threads. Just saw the car and it is almost completely rust free! The rear bumper under the exhaust has a small hole and a small spot of surface rust on the floor near the drivers side door pillar. The headliner needs redone.Needs carpet and door cards recovered. The idea of a big silver Cadillac and an old Airstream or Avion travel trailer is appealing. If it was a coupe I would be arranging a tow truck to pick it up.At $3k that might be a good winter project.
I p***ed on that project it was very clean but I would like to have a coupe.Going to spend more time reading and looking around late 40's early 50's chevy or Olds 88 are really looking good to me now. Spent some money buying a quality mig welder, Esab migmaster 250 with an aluminum spool gun and some upgrades for my Ingersoll Rand T30 compressor. Probably a good idea to get my shop setup right and cleanup a few other minor projects before dragging anything home.
That's probably for the best. Practice welding too. BTW, the rest of us here are crazy and always have too many projects and are constantly looking at more. Don't let on that you are sane too often!
