Hoping someone's been through this before.
I want to couple a 5 speed transmission to a Flathead 8ba motor. It will be going into a '36 Ford 5 Window Coupe. I need a recommendation of the 5 speed and if possible, a rear end.
I know there are different bell housings for the motor that will allow the trans to bolt up, but I'm also concerned about where the shifter comes through the floor.
    Thanks
    Tom

  2. Couple things to consider. Do you want to go with open or closed driveline?

If you say Open Drive then your transmission selection is wide open, everything from S10 T-5 all the way up to aftermarket TKO's. With the open drive conversion you will need to rethink your entire suspension. You will need to add a trouque arm, 3 link, 4 link, parallel leafs,...? You will need to do something besides just worrying about the transmission and adapters.

If you want to stay closed driveline, you will be limited to S-10 or Jeep T-10 transmission. There is a guy "crazydaddyo" on here who makes an adapter to adapt a closed driveline to a S10 4WD 5 speed. Then just shorten the drive shaft and TT once you have made your decisions on the motor to transmission adapters.

Personally I prefer the later consider it seems a little cheaper and closer to a traditional build, just with a 5-speed.

You have very nice car. Look into Mitchell overdrive unit. I think in the look run it would cheaper and easyer. Good luck.

@jrblack30: Open drive. I'm going to bag the rear end and C channel the frame.

  5. Additionally, either way you go you will have to modify your frame and floor to fit the larger diameter transmission:(:(

Search up Flat Ernie's "Ultimate T5 transmission guide" thread on here and study well. Lots of good info in there regarding shifter locations, what fits what, etc......

Using the S-10/S15 trans the shifter comes out in the center of the floor about 7 inchs back from the stock hole.

A 85-86 (flat nose) S-10 5 speed works well, shifter is in the right place. Have used this in a 35 and a 37

I just put a Flatty with an S10 T5 in my AV8 and love it. well worth it. I am putting a T56 six speed in my 36 Chevy next so it can handle more power. In my 36 I put a Ford 8.8 from an Explorer in it. They are similar to a 12 bolt chevy rear but much cheaper. Mine is 4.11 gear, trac lock. 31 spline with disc brakes. The earlier ones have drums. I bought two rear ends and used both short axles and narrowed the long side. This gives you a rear around 56.5 inches if my memory works. They are cheap, strong and easy to find. I also C notched the frame rails. Fits a 36 chevy perfect.[IMG][IMG]
