Hello Hambers, i done a search but i need a more specific answer if possible. I went to register this 53 f100 i have in my avatar, last registered in Nevada, i didnt bring the truck with me today, it rained and i have no wipers, that being said they said it needs to be inspected. Now she told me it a vin inpection, which i have in the glove box, #' matching. The plates not riveted, so i will do that, no prob. I cant find the frame #'s, dont know if they will need those. But will they inspect anything else?? My lights and brakes work, but i have no turn signals and no seatbelts and no wipers. So i have a temp till feb 2012, should i get everything working or do i just get a vin inspection? Thanks in advance, Robert
They are only verifing it's VIN. Are you a member of AAA? If so, they will do a VIN verification with far less hassles...
Took my '51 Pontiac to the local DMV (Make an appointment so you can LEGALLY drive it there without plates...) Woman came out, looked in the windshield for the VIN...I opened the door & showed it to her on the door frame...she laughed....wrote it down...went back in...and I was on my way in 15 min's. Very straightforward. You can also get the CHP to inspect it at your home. Or have AAA do it if your a member....edit...must type faster ^^^
Vin locations vary. Try on frame rail forward of steering box. Also possible on right frame rail and crossmember under radiator support.
I recently paid the owner of a smog inspection station to come to my house and do a vin verification. The CHP told me they don't go to your address, you go to them. Do a google search for vin varifiers in your area and a list will come up. It just so happened in my case, a local smog station's owner is a vin verifier. My car wasn't running so it was worth the $30.00 for him to come to me. Make sure your vin plate doesn't look tampered with or you will have to go to a CHP referee station who will check the secondary vin on the frame and engine number.
My vin plate thats mounted in the glovebox door is screwed in, im going to poprivet it to make it look better, i have a temp registration so im legal till February. I also need a weight certificate, luckily my work has a scale and is certified, so i think i will be okay. I just want to get her in my name without dealing with a non-op. Thanks for the imput, anyone else have dmv similar stories? Robert.
Oh, i am a member of AAA, but once the guy saw the Nevada pinkslip, he said go to the Dmv, we only do Cal transfers.
Robert...have a private vin verifier do it for you...I would also encourage you to NOT pop rivet the plate onto the glovebox door. The manner the different plates are attached are in their system somewhere...on the vin verification form it does ask how the plate is attached...pop rivet, screw, rosette rivet..etc....if it was originally held on with screws leave it that way...dont mess with it...riveting on a plate that was held on with screws will lead them to believe it was tampered with..which is opposite of what you want!
The scales that weigh the truck, provides a weight certificate that has to be signed by a State of California Weightmaster, or the DMV won't recognize the weight certificate.
Yes, my job is certified weightmaster Cerberus. Ok, back to the plate, it already looks tampered with, missing a screw, and the rest arent tight, like metal screws, so i have to ask anaother f100 owner how theirs looks like stock i guess, i'll do some more googling. Theres a mobile vin verifier for $65 i will call when im ready. Why did i buy an out of state rod, cause i always make it harder for myself, haha. You guys are cool, thanks again.
I bought my 61 vette in Texas. It had not been registered in many years. I needed a VIN verification so I trailered it down to the Lakeport PD and asked for a verfication. A couple of men in blue came out, I showed them where the VIN plate is, they copied down the info and I was good to go. Easy, peasy nice and sleazy I always say. With the old title, bill of sale and the VIN verification form the DMV gave me no grief...for once. Since you have a truck I understand why they are asking for the weight cert.
Hey Ed whats up buddy! the prob is with AAA is they dont do out of state transfers ( I just did 6 vehicles from Maine) I used a VIN verifier...she came to my house checked all my VINs and then went to DMV for me with a payment to her then a blank check to DMV, with in a few days she was back with all my plates and regs!! She also did my YOMs too, BTW I had no titles from Maine for my 51 and 54...just valid reg from Maine and my bills of sale and titles from NJ an TX where I got them. She had to fight the managers on it but she won!!
Here in Torrance the Police dept. will come to the house and verify the VIN #. Just make sure the # matches the registration... Also get the form from DMV and have it ready for them...
I have had at least 5 vin inspect and title transfers done at my AAA never a problem, all were out of state titles. The last one was just 6 months ago. I had transferred my Scout Ca. title to Mi. someone in Mi. can't read and changed one number in the vin. The nice guy at AAA caught it and even attached a correction form so Ca. DMV. would send my new Ca. title back with the right numbers. Call AAA main info number, yes they do out of state title transfers.
Thats weird because the Costa Mesa AAA told me flat out they dont do out of state title transfers. I also went in recently with a buddy to reg his van he got off a dealer and the AAA was half way thru the paperwork when he noticed it was a dealer sale. He said he could finish and we had to have DMV do it...got to DMV and the agreed. I guess the whole system needs to be aligned Either way good luck man!
I believe the screws are correct for that year. On my '57 the tag is on the door post, held on with screws. Here's a pic I found with Google.
The Triple A in Ventura will not even do an "In State" transfer if it also involves YOM plates. You will be referred to your local DMV. State Certified VIN Verifiers are the way to go. Chevy 54; PM me with who you ended up using. Thanks
DMV ..... does anyone have anything nice to say about them?... even arnold couldnt get them to mind! I got a used car lot owner here that verifies vin's .... keeps it pretty simple.... its always nice to have a carhauler just for situations like this
OK, wish me luck tomorrow at the DMV, i had a vin verifier come to the house, check, took the truck and got it weighed, 3120#, check....i'll let you-all know tomorrrow, thx for the imput, Robert.
"Hello Hambers, i done a search but i need a more specific answer if possible" I went in to local Santa Cruz DMV with my 66 Coronet bought in Oregon. A young gal came out and I showed her the vin plate in the drivers door bulkhead, She asked me how many miles were on the car and I showed her the new odo with 100 miles on it (motor, trans and suspension were all rebuilt) She submitted the paperwork and I got a title within 2 weeks.
I dont recomend you do that!!!!! it will just piss them off and you open yourself up to breaking the law!!!!! You will NOT SNEAK one by them!!!! they are going to BLUE TAG YOUR CAR! which is just fine they will issue you a new vin and rivit it in your Driver side A pillar.....Then your done.
^^^^ I didnt rivit the plate, another Hamber told me that they came stock with screws, im just missing one and i tightened the rest. Anyway, i have my plates and im all registered now, thanks guys for the imput.
