49 Ford Coupe VIN and Title Questions

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Shawn F., Dec 7, 2011.

  1. Buddy, does the number on that plate match the number on your title? Some say theirs does and some say it doesn't.
    Thanks!

I have had one 49 before, then the number was on the drivers side firewall, my current has it on the body tag on this location.
Did not see it first, had to move alot of branches of pine and use a pocet light:)!

Yes , the number on this tag matches my VIN number on my title .

My car has a BODY number stamped on the firewall , just off-center towards the driver's side . In '50 , they went to a much longer body number (with more car info) , stamped (higher) in the center of the firewall , and the VIN tag was closer to the center of the firewall (on the passenger side) , not hidden in the corner as on 49's , lol .

  4. Buddy, does your number on that serial # plate have a star before and after the VIN Number? I am going to try and locate a number on the frame other than the front sub frame since mine was cut off and a MII installed and cut the floor open so I can show the inspector the plate, title and chassis all matches with no problems. I do not know where the other numbers will be on the frame. Some sources I found online said rear crossmember near the bumper up top and others say near trans cross member. I crawled underneath to try and feel for them but of course no luck and my frame has been painted too so no clue how I will figure this one out (lifting the body off is not really an option)...

Before you cut open the floor in hopes of finding any stamped numbers on the frame, read my reply to you above at responce #22.

The inspectors know where to find the numbers and what they are supposed to look like. It is doubtful you will be required to remove the body. They will work with you to get a new North Carolina title.

Yes , IIRC my number on the plate does have the stars on it , just as you described . On a 50-51 shoe , (in addition to the VIN tag) the VIN is stamped into the diagonal brace that connects the front frame horn to the heavy crossmember (under the engine) ... the 49 doesn't have those braces , so don't bother looking for it there ;) . You'd be hard-pressed to be able to feel the numbers on top of the frame anywhere , especially since the frame's been in the weather for 60 years .
The big stamped numbers on the firewall are BODY INFO numbers ... not VIN numbers .

  8. Well you were right Buddy, no luck finding numbers on this thing. The car has been garaged almost 90% of it's life and it has a frame off resto so the frame is still semi gloss black and no rust but it was sanded and grinded on so I'm sure the numbers are gone. I know the car is legit to the title, etc so now I just need to find someone to do the numbers/letters and stars for me. Any idea where to find the star dies (got the numbers and letters) or who can do the stamping for me for the serial number? Local gun shops cannot do it due to them not having the correct size stamps which I believe are 1/8... Also the star I'm assuming is just an asterics like so: * and not an actual star shape correct?

I just looked at my serial # plate , and the stars are actually a 5-legged asterisk . I'd imagine that noone would actually notice if it was 6-legged though , as they're pretty darn small ;) . They're not as tall as the letters , BTW - probably half the size , and biased toward the top of the numbers/letters .

Dude, if your so sure your stuff is right, just call in the inspector. He/she will tell you what you need to do. Anything else can run you into deep dodo. Tampering with numbers is a Federal Offense.

Why do you want to make things hard? Call the inspector and be done with it.
When they get there, BE NICE! They have a job to do, make it as easy as possible, falsifying numbers and forging plates won't make their job easy. Gene

  11. What the inspector will tell me to do is a bunch of run around bull crap (bonded titles, waiting, filling out paper work, new tag, etc). I dont have time for that... I already talked to the DMV now and they talked about bonded titles, etc but they said if there is a number on the firewall then it's no big deal as long as it matches the title. Since it's so old of a car they wont make a huge deal most likely... :D

I agree with you and have attempted to point this out in my two previous posts.

This poster seems determined to do it "his" way though and that's his choice.

In an attempt to make the titling experience an easy one step, he is on the path to major problems.

I have registered and titled five different vehicles here in North Carolina that needed to be inspected by the N.C License and Theft Bureau over the past thirty years. While the process has changed some in the last four years, it actually has become a much quicker process since the info is recorded in a computer imediately at the time of the inspection. Taking digital photos are also new.

The only reason that I can see to attempt to circumvent the inspection process would be because there is a known 'problem' with the vehicle.

My final comment to the OP is to call the inspector to have the car inspected. After the inspection, they will tell you what, if anything, is required to get a new title in your name. It really is a simple straightforward process. Answer all questions with short but honest answers. Don't add or embellish or offer what you think might be why there are no numbers to be found. Do it right and you will be happy.

The local Tag Office is a privately licensed and operated business that is authorized to issue you a registration & a license plate. Any statement their representative makes with reguards to titling a vehicle may not be completely correct. The title being issued is controlled by the state and as you have found out, all out of state vehicles applying for a North Carolina title must be inspected by the N.C. License and Theft Bureau.

When you wrote "What the inspector will tell me to do is a bunch of run around bull crap (bonded titles, waiting, filling out paper work, new tag, etc). "; if you haven't had the car inspected yet, how do you make this assumption?

As to "Since it's so old of a car they wont make a huge deal most likely", the only way you will find out if that assumption is correct is to getting the car inspected.

bought my first shoebox in 75 and one problem i've encountered is that the people at the license office refuse to believe that a V-8 only puts out 32.5 taxable hp. anyone else have that happen?

in missouri that plate is considered the vin #. older vehicles here don't need as many numbers as newer ones--i don't recall the cutoff date. but, to break down the number's meaning: the first letter is the engine type, B being a V8; the second is a number, 0 for 1950; next are two letters for the plant where it was built; and the remaining 6 numbers are the car's production sequence. hope that helps!
