Did a search, couldn't find an answer. I'm rebuilding a 235 Chevy 6, basic up grades. high comp head, mild cam, 2 carbs, fenton header, I'm thinking about exhaust and I was wondering if anyone has ever run the headers into one larger collector, maybe 3 inch? and then into a muffler, then into 2 inch tail pipes. Or my second thought was from the headers into an X , then 2 into the one muffler with 2 tail pipes. I want a more tuned but still rappy sound. I was thinking that everything going through one muffler would work.
I think, Patrick's Has what you wanting - as far as 2 into one muffler with 2 exhaust. Never would I use 1 muffler but that is me.
Why not just run a split exhaust with a couple cherry bombs running straight out the back? *****in' sound and looks cool under the hood....just my opinion.
2into1 has been done so if you want to do it, go for it. The main pipe should be at least 3 inches. So you will have 2 one and half inch pipes exiting the manifold, merging into one 3 or 3.5 inch pipe to the muffler. From the muffler out 2.5 inches maybe or 3.
if you want a dialed sound on your stove bolt run 1 3/4 straight tubing out the back for a week then put steel packs where the blueing stops on your tubing, I put one forward and one backwards and it sounds right! also having a nasty cam helps for a bone stock engine I love a split stock manifold with a divider plate welded in between the two chambers with a 3/8 hole drilled in it. produces a sweet rap when you let out of it
Call me a jerk, but that would completely ruin the great sound of a hot six, with split pipes. Back in the day, guys would go through a LOT of work, and trouble to split the exhaust into 2 separate pipes....and nowadays, you guys want to take 2 and put them into one?????????
Here's another option. I have a '57 235 in my t-bucket with stock manifold and no muffler. It produces a nice throaty sound. I might not be able to get away with this in town but I live in a rural area where there's no issues.
In answer to your original question on my 261 I ran Fenton splits into 1 1/2 through a Y with 3 inch outlet and then ran the 3 inch through a single Flo Master and 3inch all the way to the back going over the axle. I liked the throaty sound at idle and the roar and rap as it goes through the gears. It gets attention but doesn't attract attention if you know what I mean.
Geoff, i gotta agree. I'd stick with 2 pipes if you want the sound.. It CAN be made with a single, but guaranteed with duals. The exhaust on that car was ******ed up from mistakes made by the guy i had originally make it. It was one of those thing's i had planned to change eventually. Even with the hotter mill, i'd still stick with either the 2" OR 1-3/4" pipes, with the larger tips like it had. The smaller dia will make it more raspy, and the tips are nothing more than echo cans regardless of which dia you went with.. Mufflers mounted as far forward as possible, and shortest possible, if you run them. I know it's not rocket science, and certainly nothing new as it's been done that way for years, but there's a reason.. it sounds GREAT. As far as being tuned, i understand exactly what you mean, but you're not going to gain that much from it with a 6 unless it's got some serious heat inside.... I'm thinking an X pipe, or balance pipe in general, will remove some of the rap that's created with the split manifold too..can't say for sure, but they generally do that on 8's, so i can't see why it wouldn't do that for a 6. Tony
yea Im with chopolds, I dont know about the two into one thing... or turbo mufflers either for that matter.
I ran a set of Porters off a 292 a while back, and that sounded absolutely awesome. better than my sbc in my truck with two cherry bombs.... by far

Thanks for this link, the 57 with Flowmasters and duals is really along the lines if what I want. Great idle and just enough rumble while reving up. I want to keep the car somewhat quiet, just enough rumble to make you notice it go by. Cl***y.
I understand what you are saying here, but honestly you want to run a Fenton style header with true dual exhaust. I had Flowmasters on a 51 with a 216 and it sounded great. Kind of mellow at an idle but when going down the road it had a great 6 cylinder rap to it.
