Not real familar with three speeds, I have a t87 toploader. with the two shifter arms coming out the top of the trans. Which arm does what? IS the front arm 1st and 2nd or Revers and 1st. What is the shift pattern. Yeh i am a FNG but learing as I read all the posts.
IIDK, but you could engage each one, spin the input shaft and count the output revolutions to figure it out.
Mspurgeon,If that trans. is a mid 50's MOPAR piece, one lever is a selector, and the other is the gear change lever. the selector lever will move fore and aft, the gear change will rotate ,with 3 detent positions. Now (1) selector back (2) shift lever, rotate CW to stop. this will be 1st gear, then rotate CCW thru detent to stop, that will be 2nd gear (3)then rotate CW thru detent to stop and your in 3rd gear.(4) Reverse can be found by selector back and shift lever rotated CCW to stop. I hope that helps.......... .Jack
Thank Guys, The T87 is behind a ford 223 inline 6, came out of a 1955 f100. I believe the engine is a 1957 do to the valve cover.
Valve covers are easy to change. The front lever should be 1st and reverse and the rear 2nd and 3rd. But it has been a awhile for me. Trick is to be smarter than the transmission, if the ****** is in the truck and you can't turn the imput shaft try moving both arms to neutral then move each arm one at a time to a gear. now get in front of the truvck and bump it backwards with the hood open. Watch which direction the motor turns, when the motor turns clockwise when you bump it backwards you found the 1st reverse shift arm. The other will be 2nd and 3rd.
