Hey Guys, I have been looking for a doner roof for my 53 chevy two door post for a top chop. Yesterday I came accross a 53 buick hard top that is being parted out. Does anyone know how feasable it would be to swap on the hrd top? Are they even close, and does anyone know where I could find more info? I'm going to go measure it all out this weekend, I'm just wondering whats out there. -Thanks
Switching from a sedan (post) roof to a hardtop roof is going to give you problems with the tops of the doors and making windows, etc fit. If you swap roofs, you will want all the interior garnish moldings, vent and other side windows, window regulators, trim, windshield area and rear window ***ociated with it so you can be sure you have what you need to make it all work together with the body and doors. In your case specifically, the Buick roof is going to be much larger than the Chevy roof since the Buicks were the larger Fisher body. Any serious problems with your roof now that you need to swap it or you just think it will be easier/look better?
Nothing is 'wrong' withe the roof on my chevy, at least nothing some hammer and dolly work can't cure. I would like to chop the top and got excited by the idea of having a hard top. I thought the buick would be bigger, just don't know how much yet, and I was planning on getting all of the trim and gl***. Not that it can't be done, but maybe I'll just have to keep looking.
you can hd top it just alot more involved than most people want to get involved with look at some of the BARRIS brothers old work they kustom made alot of the windshields and window moldings out of stainless steel. not to say it cant be done just the ammount of work you want to put into it becomes a factor. the stock roof is deffinetivly workable just alot of work, look back at some of the BARRIS brothers work in the 40s and you can most certainly draw motivation and inspiration from what they did .GOOD LUCK!
Be careful... that roof holds alot of the structure for that body, that's why it has the B-pillar "post" in the center. When we chopped my buddies hardtop I noticed the different structure in the floor that my 2 door post does not have. If u decide to go with a hardtop style roof, im sure you'll have to do some strengthning to the floor and frame... I think
i have herd that you can use olds roofs of the same vintage. would like to see it done. go for it. post pix!
The Olds, one piece windshield was used in place of the two piece Chevys for years, so the roof from the Olds has to be close
a cutting torch and welder have made many people into believers... depends on the amount of work you wanna get into... but sedan to hardtop is always alot of work.. if you do try it..like someone else said get all the parts you can from the doner car clean to the beltline or further would be best
