Don't just grab TIG rod and start practicing. The key is to study the TIG prosess. If you don't , youre just grabbing at straws. You can't practice what you don't know. There are so many things to watch for when TIG welding, it's not even funny. I've been welding with TIG for 23yrs and when I say study, I'm not ********in. Knowledge and skill level are everything when I comes to welding with a TIG.
Years ago I did all the Heiliarc aluminum welding at the shop I worked at,both new and old Bugatti bodies. I never have had the chance to TIG on steel, and it is still a "Bucket List" item. How different is aluminum vs steel?
Mild steel is much easier to weld than aluminum. Stainless and some steel alloys are more demanding to weld than mild steel, but still easier than luminum. Even if you were proficient at one time, not doing it for so long you would find it takes some practice to get back up to speed. It's no different than driving a race car, hitting a target with a gun, or running the 50 yard dash, you gradually loose your "edge".
I forgot about this thread. I have been practicing and working with one of my sanitary pipe welders at work and my welds still look like shizz.I am getting better and it really helps to watch him weld as he is very good at it.
