I noticed a few vehicles at the Revolution that had 1955 Texas license plates, but they were in '32 Fords....can you do that? I always thought you had to run a year of make plate if you wanted to run an old plate. I thought it looked cool for a 50's period hot rod....any insight on this?
Yea, I saw that too and wondered the same thing. I do not think it is legally possible. Maybe the plates were just on for show ? I am a TX dealer, so I know the rules and I do not know of a way to run `55 plates on a `32 car, but maybe there is some loophole I am not aware of ....
I broke down after a year and got regular plates (was running '56 cali plates) and window stickers, I dont like to hassle the fuzz for little things.
Why the eff is this a dumb thread? There were two '32s at the round up with '55 plates. I thought it was cool they had period plates, but didn't think it was legal to do so. So it's dumb for asking a question? Whata jackass. And you gave it one star cool guy
Not 100% positive but I think if you register it as a classic not an antique you can run a different year plate.
I saw the same thing. I want plates for my 29,but since 29 plates have gone through the roof I might be able to get something a little newer. I`m running y o m plates on two of my other cars 66&70.
Straight from the Texas Constitution and Statutes webpage Sec. 504.502. CERTAIN EXHIBITION VEHICLES; OFFENSE. (a) The department shall issue specialty license plates for a passenger car, truck, motorcycle, or former military vehicle that: (1) is at least 25 years old, if the vehicle is a passenger car, truck, or motorcycle; (2) is a collector's item; (3) is used exclusively for exhibitions, club activities, parades, and other functions of public interest and is not used for regular transportation; and (4) does not carry advertising. (b) The license plates must include the words "Antique Auto," "Antique Truck," "Antique Motorcycle," or "Military Vehicle," as appropriate. (c) A person eligible for the license plates may instead use license plates issued by this state in the same year as the model year of the vehicle and approved by the department, provided that a passenger car must bear passenger car or truck license plates and a truck must bear passenger car or truck license plates. The department may require attachment of a registration insignia to the license plate in a manner that does not affect the display of information originally on the license plate.
I don't know if this applies to Texas. Here in California you can run a '55 plated on a '32 if you can prove it was registered to the car at one time. You would need to prove it like an old registration papers or any other paper proving it was on the car at one time. CRUISER
Here's the trick that might or might not get you in trouble. Find some plates you want. You go register the car as normal, and get personalized plates with the old plate number on it. Technically this is not what you are supposed to do, but if you get pulled over or if the plates are ran it will show up as your car etc. etc. Keep the real plates in the car just in case. I haven't done this and some officers might not give you any slack, but this is what i've heard to do.
I understood what I read. I was thinking there might be a loophole before I read that law. Now I see that there is only one way to run old plates, and that is year of make.
Check again. The Lege changed the YOM rules as of 9/1/11. If you already had YOM plates, you're grandfathered and good to renew. If not, you're sol. No new YOM registrations. Check with your local tax office for more information.
Not so, the legislation did not pass. see the end of this thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=97015&page=4
I was wondering about that as well.. I would have loved to run '59 license plates on my A, just to be period correct, but now I know I can't. Well, legally, that is. Thanks for posting this question.
that is absolutely incorrect. I have a 1932 ford that I can LEGALLY run 1959 YOM plates on. the car was built in the 50's and was registered with a 1960 home built title. I have said title with the car. I can either apply for a 1932 title OR use my 1960 title. both would be perfectly legal.
In Texas you can legally run old plates on Antique or Classic registered cars , check with the tax office where you get your tags & register your car for details / requirements
Calm down... I just thought this was a very silly question to start a thread about, remember this is a hot rod forum. Common sense should tell you those plates were on the cars for the "period" hot rod show. Quite a bit of miss information in this thread, but in TEXAS you can run YOM plates. Texas was going to change it last Sept. and limit YOM plates for only those registered as antique, but apparently that wasn't passed so you can run them with normal registration. With that said, I run an old unregistered plate on my A Coupe and haven't been hassled...do so at your own risk.
