I am trying to find that crazy sedan from Japan a few years back... but I can't remember if it was an "A" OR Deuce......

I have a hard time considering a 32 as a custom. Westerguards is just an early hotrod to me and I thought it looked out of place the the GNRS that year. Sure it is a cool car and an Iconic person build it who is famous for customs but with no fenders, it screams hotrod to my eye, even with a lift off top. the beachboys cover car, that is a custom. a sectioned full fender 32 can look like a custom depending on the wheels they use.

Tell you one thing, with an 11.5/1 Desoto, 4 dueces on a ram log and 4.56's in the back, I'd bet it went like a "real" hot rod. It also confirms that aftermarket 15" long bar lancer caps were around back in the day.

Jimmy,..Ray 's 32 Roadster Pick up is by far one of my faves.
Doesn't get the attention it deserves.

I see a pretty nice "custom" roadster PU off to the left there. Not a deuce, but certainly a custom/hot rod.

Rik, well crap, my old eyes must have been very tired when I posted my response! Sorry, I really didn't look at the background to see the cars that were aligned behind the deuce. Aaaaaaaaargh, getting old and losing my memory is one thing, but being stupid is another! Sorry, I'll try harder not to post dumbass comments in the future...

  9. I like 'em better as hot rods. To me, a '32/'33/'34 has got to have an attitude. Most of these custom versions worked more towards the look versus the performance. Not hating them though, just not my cup 'o tea.

I live in Graffiti land but don't think I have ever seen a 32 Ford I didn't like. It's just some more than others.

I know it was built by a guy(cant remember his name now) in the Brockville Ontario area he finally sold it and it passed through a few guys and ended up in the US the stripped areas are from a rework started back in the 60's..

Thanks for posting those pics Rikster.. I really like the white padded topped cabbies and that roadster with the black top with white outlining..classy.

That green Ricky Nelson coupe is in a museum up my way and is really a great car upclose. It was repainted by the current owner's bodyshop in that cool shade of green.

It is really amazing to see how many different opinions there are about what is a Custom and what not.
This is already a big think when it comes to cars which we in general accept as being potential Custom Car subjects. But on this a 1932 Ford which is mostly considered to be a Hot Rod it looks to be even more so.

I want to get back to the Westergard 1932 Ford that was at the GNRS Customs Then & Now. Boones mentioned that this car was to him the only car that looked out of place at this event. And I think there have been more people that felt that way.
And I agree to say this car is not a Custom Car. But I do feel that that car, or any very early 1932 Ford with custom touches belonged at that event. Because the event was to show the journey of the Custom Cars. How it started and how it evolved, and Hot Rods with Custom touches are part of that. But I agree that a sample with full fenders and bumpers would have been a more suitable candidate. However we where not able to find one, and this car with the Harry Westergard name on it was a very good "alternative" I think.

In my eyes the 1931 2 door Ford that Hot Rod Dean posted fits the description of this title thread perfectly... despite it being an 31 instead of a 32. But this is the way I see a Customized Hot Rod, and this is a style of car you saw much more in the 1940's, and I hope we will be seeing more of this in the future.

Lil Coffin is another 1932 Ford that has been posted. And for me personally the first version with the full fenders and stock height top as built by Dave Stuckey fits in the description as well. But when it was further modified and in its finished shape as we all know it from the Monogram 1/24 scale plastic kit. I think it moved on to another category... the Show Rods. Of coarse still customized, but to me the term Custom feel does not apply anymore.

In that fantastic 1940 video that was posted here on the hamb there was also a nice 32 Ford with a Custom feel. I think it is a 1932 Ford Voctoria, but it could be a 31 model as well.. hard for me to see. and its only in there for a second or so.
Nice two tone body. Chrome license plate cover mounted on the body, possible 1939 Ford taillights, and white wall tires that look to be same size on all four corners. It has a very classic feel to it... I like it.

Norwell and Craig go WAY BACK! Jeff got an in depth demo from Craig on how he applies GoldBond to the twins and the crotchal region.
Remember that Mr. Norwell? Do you still have trouble sleeping?

    I remember a '32 with a '34 Brewster (valentine-shape) grille.
I believe it was a cover-car on one the East Coast small magazines. Can't located my copy, though.

If memory serves, it was built by two brothers in Connecticut in the late fifties-early sixties. The car was channeled and the hood lengthened to give it a European look.

OK. I just reorganized my little books and started digging through.
Apparently I had a brain-fart and confused two different cars.

The car built by the Connecticut brothers, Tom and Carroll Downing, was featured in Rodding and Re-Styling, October 1958. However, it was a '33-34 Ford 5-window coupe. It was channeled with a lengthened hood, and '34 grille.

However, I still think I remember a '32 Ford with a Brewster grille.

    Anyone else remember this car?

    They were called CUSTOM RODS.
Real hot rod mods were for performance only to go faster,
but who knew the cool looks of chopping and channeling would catch on just for appearance.
    Looking cool is still BITCHEN!
