Swap meet etiquette, would this piss you off??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by AstroZombie, May 19, 2011.

  1. Amen, this is rule #1: Always know what your stuff is worth. Cars, parts, homes, everything. Its only a buyer's market if there's only one buyer. If you're ever tempted by the lowball / screwball offer...remember that someone else is always around the corner and their cash spends the same.

I have vended at swap meets for years the way i deal with the resellers first thing in the am is to quote prices double what i want once the crowds come in i drop to a reasonable price. But if i qoute you a price and you buy the part i dont care what you do with it

That's just retarded. I've sold lots of stuff to you guys from across the pond. You travel thousands of miles to go to Hershey and Carlisle just to look for parts, I'm not going to begrudge you buying them.

  5. I have had a magic polish guy come to my spot and try his magic polish on a few of my parts to demo in his spot.

I know plenty of guys who make good livings doing the swaps full time. Its usually only the people who sold stuff too cheap or can't play the game right that bash the guys who are smart enough to make a living from it. Get a life dude.

you said it was a price you could live with so whats the problem? you agreed to sell to him. there are that type all over just remember why you were there

  8. There's not much honor at the swap meets. But there doesnt really have to be. Everything is "as is" and it's definately an "at your own risk" lifestyle. Besides, it's just smart business.

its every man for himself at these things.....morals and "ettiquette" are out the window. Get the parts you need for your project before someone else does.

If you sell something for what your want out of it and someone else resells across the way tough shit..thats how it goes.

My neighbor and I take stuff to swap meets now and then after we accumulate left overs from projects. We take the stuff to sell it. Once some guys came up and were discussing amoung them selves about needing a trans for their car, then they approached us and asked about a chevy 3 spd my neighbor had. He had a price of $100 on it with clutch and flywheel. They asked some questions but didn't seem to have that amt of cash. Around 11 a.m., they came back around and were discussing it amoung them selves and it sounded like they really needed it-my neighbor asked them if they were going to use it and they told him theirs had just gone bad so he just gave it to them-he sure didn't want to haul it home and they were very thankful-a win-win situation.

Yes and they all tell you up front that they are buying to resell and they have all at times told the seller they were way off on their prices and paid them more than their asking price because it was way to low.

I don't see what the problem is here. If you thought the parts were worth more, you could've asked for more! What difference does it make WHAT the buyer does with them when they are HIS?! Sounds like sour grapes to me. Getting mad 'cause someone is willing to RISK that he can get more for that part is nonsense! He WAS willing to TAKE THE RISK, you were not. YOU wanted a quick sale and didn't want to haul them back home! Seems to me you BOTH won. Get over it.

A few years back I found a nice set of fog lights at Hershey for my `35. They had a price tag on them. When I tried to pay, the dealer said I can't take that for them, that's what I paid. I let him keep them. He probably bought them the same day, or just decided he wanted more money.

I had a box of old model a wrenches that I had a fair price on, $2.00 each, only to find them on the other side of the event for $4-5 a piece, and then gave him some advice on never coming back ,its things like this that starts killing off swaps

If you can live with the price it sold for, what's the problem? I've set up at swap meets a lot and see it all the time. This is how most of those guys get their inventory... my stuff I sell on the other hand is either stuff I took off a car myself or those parts I bought that didn't fit the way I wanted them to. When I sell stuff, I never go below my minimum selling price. If some profiteer makes an offer I like and he thinks he can make more on he can have at it. If he won't come up to what I want for it, he's not the only person at the swap meet... not mention it came with me and it can go home with me.

it happens all the time nothing new , what gets me is when you try to get a deal from them and they forget the deal you passed on to them.

You will meet all types at a swap meet. People will drop your parts, low ball all day. Beg that they need the part. If they get a good deal after selling a sob story they will brag to their buddies that they screwed somebody and turn around and shaft the next guy. But I still love the hunt for the rare old speed parts or vintage sheetmetal. I need therapy!

dad sold some 51 chevy fenders for $25 bucks once. a little later we see the fenders walk by, and the guy said he just paid $75. the guy we sold them to was set up a row behind us. we laughed about it, and marked the next set a little higher. dad is the type that doesn't want to take it home.

I go to alot of swap meets & always have an asking price & selling price. Once I get my money they can do what ever they want.

I always ask when buying what is their best price, no harm asking. I try not to beat up the guy selling .

Best line I've heard: I've always wanted one of these*************************to sell!

Yep and the guy you sold the stuff to is the guy who most likely will be packing it to the next ten swapmeets until he gets tired of wagging it around and puts the price down where it belongs.

Old thread I know but some things never change and never will change.

The last swap meet I set up at I had a fellow swapper come over and buy a bunch of stuff for one price. I new he was going to resale it and I didn't care. My goal was to come back empty and it almost worked. Even gave away some cams, rods and pistons to a local club to build trophies. I had a grand more than I came with and that made me happy.

  28. Cash in my hand beats a reseller taking it home for being too greedy. It also accomplishes my goal of getting rid of stuff I do not need, then turn that cash into things I do need.

Sounds like you are upset because you did not get every penny the parts were worth yourself, Not trying to sound rude but I do not understand what the problem is, he did not twist your arm and make you sell him the stuff, And although you may not see it this way, but you was helping him, as with the profit he gets from the sale of the items he bought from you, he will be able to buy what he really needs for his own project. I have bought and sold parts at swaps since I was 8 years old. that is how I am able to build my own stuff. (buying, selling and trading) This is how the game is played, I get to the meet as early as possible and try to buy as many items as I can for resell. (there are lots of reasons for this that I am not going to go into as i don't feel like typing all of them) But one of them is because I worked my ass off loading for 3 days, spent a couple of hundred in gas to get there and had to buy spots to vend at. So I always try to pickup on some good deals early to help recover my fees of just getting there. And Guys like me are taking a gamble on buying stuff from guys like you. As it does not always sell. what I really love is when I make someone a offer on a part early friday morning. And he says no.....Then comes over to me on sunday afternoon and begs me to buy it, so he does not have to take it back home. Now who was the greedy one??......Bottomline is don't be a cry baby. If you don't want to sell your item for a price you are offered then keep it. just my 2 cents

Shit I just notced this was posted last year...LOL
