In need of some help here-- Anyone know what needs to be done to get one of these working w/o the computer? 1,2,3 should go with rpm as normal right? just needs a switch for od?
    It's out of a 92-- thanks,JST:confused:

  2. So far as I am aware, the only way to use a E4OD without the whole computer...is to buy a stand-alone controller. Baumann Engineering http://www.becontrols.com/ makes the best-known one....and it isn't cheap.

This is generally why the AOD is used, rather than the AODE or E4OD. The E4OD is also a monster to fit into something else. :)

Computer control is required for AOD-E, 4R70W (also sometimes known as the AOD-E/W), and the E4OD.

Besides Baumann, TCI is making a controller too. If it were a 4R70W you could get a full time manual shift valvebody for it, but it eliminates all automatic shifting functions. Nobody makes such a part for the E4OD that I am aware of.

Did you end up getting a controller for your ****** or swap to another type? I am putting a e40d in my f-100 wondering if you used compushift which seems to be the most compe***ively priced....

They are monstrous by car-transmission standards (after all Ford used them exclusively in trucks), presumably you've measured and know you have room. I gave up on putting one in my '64 Galaxie, sold it off and went for a built 4R70W instead. The E4OD would have needed m***ive floorpan surgery.

Still planning to go Baumann because I'm more familiar with it. No, none of these transmissions will work without the controller - all the shift valving is done through electronically-controlled solenoids.

BTW, the E4OD/4R100 had a lot of reliability problems in its early years; I've been told '95 was the first good year though it's continued to get incremental improvements after that. It was also I think the last year for the old Windsor and 385-series bellhousing patterns, after that they were all mod-motor. Depending on how you plan to use it, you might want to make sure it's got the right drums, etc.

i got it out of a 1993 lighting and i am utilizing the 351w from the same truck. Shifted fine when i purchased it. Just wondering if anyone out there has used compushift. You have used baumann in the past? Did you buy the wiring harness to go with it? I am on the fence if its worth spending the extra $$$

Your93 trans will not work without a speed sensor. After 91 the signal came from the electronic speedo and the speedo drive gear on the output shaft was omitted. you must change the output shaft to a early one with a gear to run a speed sensor, and a tail housing with a speedo hole. You will also need to mount a TPS on the carb. I like the Baumann.

I was going to use cable X to remedy my speedometer sensor issue. As far as a qiring harness i was gonna go with the compushift + the wiring harness for the cheap price. As to the diesel computer i've looked into that but it seems like a lot of "guess" work. I am not to well versed in electrical on these trannies and i am trying to keep apperances as "traditional" as i can. With the baumann controller the need of a "TV" or tps sensor is still needed for the controller to work?
