HAHA well you can't be much closer to B.C and still be in Alberta than when you are in Waterton so we will forgive your Yankee mistake.:D

For what it's worth, my dad was a hotrodder from way back, and I pretty much grew up with a wrench in my hand. Just not a welder.

It's even more of a mind blower in person. Can't wait to see it again. Love the toneau cover in the interior and the removeable catwalk all smart solutions to various problems. Also the windsheild sunk in the cowl.

  5. Update time!
Last night was Johnny's night, we met at the New West again for supper.
Back at the shop we had to shuffle a bunch of stuff around, the shop is crazy busy and unfortunately there is car in the front of the shop with no wheels on it, so we couldn't roll it out to make room. But with some shuffling we made just enough room to set up Johnny's ch***is.

Last weekend Johnny and I welded up the wishbones and ***embled the front end, so tonight Cory and Fat Dave set it up underneath and started fitting the wishbone mounts. The bones needed to be pie cut to get the caster going the right way.

Dave continued on with the ladder bars.

Johnny and I cut some seamless tubing and started making a new tierod. I didn't get to help as mush as normal tonight as I was jumping back and forth between Johnny's car, and the car in the front of the shop with no wheels on it.

Charlie picked up where he left off on the head porting.

Dave got the other piece for the ladder bars made and welded in. Both sides are done now, and just need some final grinding and finishing.

The gussets for the ladder bar mounts are tacked in now.

Front wishbone mounts tacked in place.

And that was all for the night. It was a pretty exciting milestone for Johnny as this was the first time his ch***is was up on both axles with suspension under it. If had some tire we could have rolled it around!:D
At the end of the night, we relaized we had no inappropriate pictures, so Dave took care of that.:D Dave dedicates this photo to Spokane Chris!

Congrats to Johnny. A milestone attained. How's the head porting coming along?

Oh, there was no mention of what you guys enjoyed at the New West although I am pleased you have decided it's good again.

  11. The two specails at the New West were Chicken quesadillas or Toasted bacon and egg sandwiches. We all went with sandwich.

Yeah, it's Thursday night. To Lee, Johnny and Big ****, this is starting to resemble an addiction. I actually look forward to Thursdays now for the updates. I hope went well.

wanabe28, that's pretty damn funny, I don't care who you are.

  16. Hey everyone sorry for the late update....
Last Wednesday we had the meatloaf special at the New West. Johnny and Fat Dave couldn't attend. Fat Dave is suffering from the plague, as well as Johnny's son Liam.
Back at the shop we got to work on Daves Fleetline.
Dave finished welding up his filler neck.

I started shaping another piece for the 1/4 extension.

While we were doing that, Cory, a good friend of the Clutch Poppers showed up with Christmas gifts for the entire club... What a swell guy!

Charlie started shaping the gas door patch he cut out last time. His first time ever doing any shaping and using a planishing hammer.

Allen joined us again on Wednesday. Sounds like he might be joining us more often again. Thats good, we miss Al. He finsihed all the prep work for Daves bumperettes.

Charlies first time welding sheet metal. Not bad for a newbie...

I spent a good part of the night ***isting Charlie, so Al and Dave teamed up on the 1/4 panel.

    All welded in...

And at the end of the night, Daves piece is pretty much done. Still needs some fine tuning, but it's close now.

Thanks Lee. The fender extensions are going to look slick on Dave's Fleetline.

Oh and I think he needs to see a doctor. His big **** seems to have developed some directional issues. Maybe it was all the fire that was shooting out of it! He may have melted it.

As usual, Fred is the best dressed a**** you guys :D.

You guys have any probs with warpage when using the MIG on large patches like the filler door patch? I'm surprised Dave did not TIG it in.

Normally I would but a few factors I am considering, I want to have the quarters finished by end of January, so time (tig on sheet metal takes a long time and warps as well, although we could planish it back I feel more confident with the mig. Tig you can **** weld stuff and barely use any filler rod, but with the mig if you leave the blade with of a zip cut it leaves a nice flat bead, if you leave about 3 dots, that's about as much as I like to go on a flat panel and then not weld In that area until you can put your hand on it.

I am really impressed with charlies body work, his patch was perfect, and no warpage, much better than when I attempted it for the first time. Seems he's a natural, even working in a restoration shop, with a few years experience, I made a few boo boos..... Patience is the key.

This is some good stuff! I noticed there was an Overhaulin' shirt on the set.. But I don't see any cars getting done within a week? :D

Keep up the good work, guys! Here I am, down in Texas complaining my garage is cold at a brisk 48 degrees (to be fair.. 48 was the high)!

  23. The high today is suppose to hit 46 today. :D. We have had a real nice mild winter. Hopefully the next 2 months are the same.

Thanks for the info, I ***ume this is Dave?

Don't you find that the MIG welds are significantly harder to grind down to smoothness and sometimes result in warpage just from the grinder heat. I am not arguing here, to be clear. I agree with all the statements you made and your reasoning. I also find it is very difficult to hammer weld the MIG welds even after they have been ground smooth. I was really surprised how smooth that patch looked after the grinding was done because when I saw the MIG welds I thought, "uh oh, lots of grinding needed there."

  25. I couldn't agree with you more, as I am a huge fan of tig welding. However it's Dave car, so it's Daves choice. Beside so far him and Charlie have done all the welding and grinding on it.:D

Yup, this is Dave, it is harder to grind, I have a personal philosophy that using a 1/4 inch stone and having the welds almost all the way ground before using a 36 grit disk helps keep the warpage down. Tig is far superior, far more workable and can be planished, mig cannot, even hammer on dolly can crack a mig weld, I am sacrificing speed over workability.
