Parking brake is acting up-you can set it, but it doesn't hold well. I need a sticker now, do I need to have a parking brake?
many companys sell a park lock that works great. all you do is step on the pedal and push the button down. it holds the brakes locked. I have used them and passed NJ inspection with it.
I think it is required but you might hit a place that does'nt really check for that stuff since you have an old car. The place I go too will usually pass you if it stops and has lights.
Don't take it to one those Mr. Sticker places......holy Jesus. You need it....especially if they're gonna check it.
Don't know how picky they'll be. I had a garage fail my late model Chevy truck for the loose parking brake. That was the only thing wrong, but they sure checked it. Terry's right, unless it's your daily driver, antique plates are the way to go. Hey Terry, just saw your post here. How's Slick doin?
If you can set it but it doesn't hold well, it prolly just needs adjustment. Jack it up (most likely drivers side frame rail area) & find where its adjusted at, then turn the stop nut 'til it tightens up.
Yup its needed. Also, inspection places are checking everything more carefully now. There was a ton of audits a while back and now they are getting retrained and certified for smog testing. I've had good luck with Howdy honda. Stay far away from the Inspection Station(or Sticker Station). They are a bunch of dicks. They take a tape measure to every set of headlights to make sure they aren't too low.
I beg to differ on the parking brake requirement. It is my understanding that it is not required on any vehicle greater than 30 years old. Now my information comes from a vecicle inspector and not the Texas Vehicle Code, but I belive it is true. Same goes for turn signals.
Just register it as an antique and then you dont even have to worry about the inspection ... thats what I did.
y'know, once you move to the mountains, you stop worrying about silly inspection stickers, and START worrying about things like brakes that actually work regardless of what the law requires. it's good practice everywhere, regardless of the terrain. dual master cylinder and a working parking brake, no less.
There ya go man- I just put it in gear when I park! Looks like a trip to Crushproof is in order (damn carb is f@ckin' up, too)
