uploading photo problems?

Discussion in 'Questions & Suggestions' started by High Plains Drifter, Nov 14, 2011.

  1. I know the HAMB has had some issues the last few days with being slow and such, but I've been trying to upload photos for the last 4 days and it keeps coming up "BAD REQUEST" [your browser sent a request that this server could not understand] ? anyone else having problems uploading pictures or is it just me? Not sure if it's because of the issues the HAMB's been having?

    Thanks! Leon.........

im having the same issue, but not with all my pictures, just random ones, size isnt to large, all taken by the same camera and all the same size and such, but only about half of my pictures will work. its annoying using photo bucket (which works)... but annoying

  12. Rash,
Nothings changed on my end I have always been able to down load pix on the HAMB without having to resize them until all the problems started happening on the HAMB. Using Firefox as a browser.

    upload, not download.

Don't know what to tell you. Try making it way smaller than you would think it should be, 100X100 or something, and give it a shot.

    Let me know.

I got to thinking about this and playing around. Maybe things are different with my Moderator account? Maybe the max file size is being ignored?

So, I logged out and into this account I set up for things like this and sure enough. I couldn't post the same pic I posted above.

I started looking around, thinking it should would be nice to know what the max file size is. You'd think Ryan was smart enough to post that somewhere.

Well he is, and he did, I just never noticed it because I don't typically load through the aattachment route, and when I do, I resize to 1024 X 768 first, out of habit.

I resized the pic that I could not load to 1920 x 1275 (@24bpp) and it came in just under the max file size, and it loaded just fine.

    HAMB test.jpg

Country Gent, the pics you are posting are larger than the max size, I'm surprised the one that posted made it.

    The file size chart...

  22. hmmm, so it looks like I will have to resize them every time I upload a pic? Something had to get out of wack down the line somewhere? Like I said before all worked great before the HAMB went down a month or so ago? Not the worst thing I guess!

WE have a cushion that allows folks to upload huge images when traffic is low... however, at typical load, we do set those limits.

In any case, its best for all to resize.

you could set whatever you are taking pictures with to a lower resolution. Maybe you could skip the resize then?

Thanks RASH. I am not a computer wizard. When things work and all of sudden they don't, I get pissed. One difference here, I am on a different computer doing this. Would that change anything in the way I down loaded my photos from my camera. Change also from XP to 7. On the down side, as I mentioned previously with the XP, when I "Manage Attachments" the window comes up with NO provision to browse. Can you help me out with that. Sorry to get lengthy with this. Hopefully it might help out other members with frustrations. Thanks Ken
Edit footnote; just checked my camera, and photos being taken at 14 MP (4.3) whatever that means. I can go lower to ; 12MP,10,6,3,2,or 1.I know MP is mega pixels. How does this convert???

As far as camera terminology goes, the megapixel rating describes the largest image size the camera can produce. A higher MP rating usually isn't as important as it's made to sound but unfortunately the camera makers seem to treat it like a matter of life or death. The "4.3" you mention should actually be stated as "4:3" and it's the picture's width to height ratio. In this case the picture is 4 units wide by 3 units tall. Think of it kind of like a rear axle ratio.

A 14 MP image is a whopper and if you're planning to make large prints (8"x10", 11"x14", 16"x20" etc.) you'll want the larger image files. But for web display or to send as email attachments they're way, way too big to send full size. They take a lot longer to upload and download and use a lot more storage space.

Computer monitors and the internet don't really know much about measuring things in inches. Image sizes are always specified in pixels, width x height. Depending on your computer and monitor, your screen may be set to display at 1024x768 pixels, 1440 x 900 pixels or some other screen resolution. But in general, a picture measuring 1600x1200 is more then big enough to fill the entire screen.

So how big is a 1600 x 1200 image in megapixels? Think of it like you're trying to figure out the square footage of a wall you're painting or a floor you're wanting to buy carpet for. Multiply the height by the width of an 8' x 12' wall and you get 96 square feet. If you've got a 10' x 14' floor to cover you'll need 140 square feet of carpet. It works the same way with pixels in a digital image. A 1600x1200 pixel image size gives you a total of 1,920,000 pixels, or 1.92 million pixels, or more commonly stated as 1.92 "mega" pixels.

To post an image in a forum like this a picture measuring 800x600 or even 640x480 pixels is usually large enough and these are both less than 1/2 a megapixel. So now it's juat a matter of deciding how to get your images reduced to this size and of course there's a couple of ways you can do it.

The first way is to change your camera settings to shoot at a smaller size, like 800x600 or 640x480 so you don't have to resize them. But I don't really recommend this method because images this size are too small for making good prints. And you've got to remember to reset your camera size settings to shoot the bigger image sizes if you do want to make larger prints.

The other method is to keep shooting the larger image sizes and make downsized copies of the pictures you choose after the fact. (Always make downsized copies because if you downsize your original image file you can't re-enlarge it again back to it's original quality.) The software that comes with most cameras should allow you to easily downsize and save copies of your pictures. Later versions of Windows include tools for resizing pictures. Or FREE downloadable software like IrfanView or Google Picasa can downsize batches of pictures as copies without altering your original image file.

Look thru the threads in this post for more details on how to use some of the different software that's available.

  30. I re-size mine in the Microsoft "paint" program that's on the computer already. Fairly quick. Or reset your camera settings
