waterborne paint over Slicksand

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rex Stallion, Dec 23, 2011.

  1. I want to do some pre ***embly painting. I have to use waterborne and I like slicksand. Are these two compatible ? Or should I go epoxy primer/sealer and waterborne. Kinda stumbling along but having fun!

  2. Go with the epoxy primer /sealer. slicksand is a polyester ,like bondo and is fairly porous and tends to absorb water. I find painting over slicksand is best if using a single stage solvent based paint. You can use slicksand as long as you put a sealer over it before your water basecoat. Make sure all bare metal spots are covered.
    Water+metal = you know!
I have been in the industry for 27 years and was recently a tech rep for Sikkens.
    Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Auto air requires a sealer over your substrait then the color over the top of that...all of the nitty gritty details are located on their website

Agree with sealing prior to a Waterborne Basecoat.

    Good Luck.

Sealer is a must. The slicksand will also absorb the pigments from the color coat and will turn it blotchy later.
