Customs Building a tube grille. Ideas, tips, ect??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tugmaster, Dec 21, 2011.

  1. I would like to build a tube grille for my 60 Belair. I'm thinking of using 5/8 stainless tube. Never built one before so I'm looking for any advice or tips that are out there. I was considering a bullet or knob grille but I think a tube grille would be cleaner looking. Thanks, Todd

  2. Measure, cut, fit, weld - Whatcha waiting for.

Stuff like that I build a mockup with electrical conduit first. You can get an idea of what you want cheap. Bends notches measurements .

Have you priced your materials yet?

Build a mock up first, to see figure out the design and how you like it. Best thing is to just start and see where you end up.

  5. Pick up an old magazine or catalog from around '61-'63, they sold them for your car aftermarket, usually had enough of a line drawing you could start from there.

I've done a few, mostly out of stainless. But my old boss built the 61 Dodge I have now, with one made out of rigid copper tubing. Put a slice in the center, to "V" it, brazed it up, brazed it to supports (made from 16 ga, with 1/2" hole drilled in it, then split in half) and sent it to the chromer.
Actually I'm doing one in a week or 2 for a 61 Olds I'm building, probably do it out of 1/2" square steel tubing. Then chrome it, unless I can get a good deal on the same tubing in SS. I can do a "how-to" if anyone's interested.

I built a grill for my '32 and, during mockup, just could not get the spacing right. Happened to be reading a book that explained the FIBONACCI NUMBER which is a ratio that's used in just about everything that is pleasing to the eye. Plugged my numbers into the formula and wow...it cllicked.

    Hey Mark,

I'd be a big player for the ''how to'' on the tube grille fab. I think alot of young guys have never seen it done, and it's a great answer for someone lookin for something different inna kustom build!

Sometimes ya get lucky & find some s**** stainless steel, and can build one without having to go by a chrome shop $$$$$!
