Jeem, from you that is a honor. you have a great eye for style...

saucerhead, you know your ride is the reason I started down this journey. I was planing to build a Model A PU when you car came out in Streetrodder.. It was all i thought about and then Marshall posted his fore sale ad.. as I type this, the issue is sitting just to my right. (I have it where I can reference it for build ideas..).

would love to know the width of your grill and radiator..

gearheadbill, maybe we need to switch projects (work on each other).. still probably get nothing done but it would be a different view for a few months... LOL

    Boones,
Great start to what looks to be a great modified. I did a 28/29 rpu into a modified and narrowed the cowl 3 inches, and the grill shell 5 inches, pics attached. If you are going to go with the narrow A grill shell try to find the "Street Rodder" in which Ron Covel narrows a 28/29 grill, 5 inches but he does 5 inches at the top and 6 at the bottom and it really looks great.

  6. Rex this car is sweet! The narrowed grill with those lights looks amazing, do you have an more photos or a build thread?

Keep up the good work Boones, I'm hangin out for another update.

    Tomkelly,
I do not have a build thread for my car but I do have a lot of pictures of the building process. I started the car in 2000 after some health challenges (I figured that I had better get off my ass and build a car while I still could!!) and it took me 7 years to build. I either built or modified almost every part of the car, it was a lot of fun and very rewarding. If you want any pictures of the build drop me a PM with your E mail and I can send them to you.

Just finishing up a 750 sq foot shop extension in which I will start my next car, a lakester for Bonneville. Again going to build the whole thing, chassis, body etc. I will be fun and I may do a build thread for it although I am going to be running a motorcycle engine and it may not be "HAMB friendly".

I built mine from scratch also, but modeled my frame from a Model A. Wish I would have seen something like yours first, the 32 rails look good. Anyway, I made my rear suspension like yours so far - except with a ladder bar style suspension. It works fine, but I am considering mounting my lower bars as a floater type setup and putting upper bars on it like some sort of a 4-link.

My one regret with my modified is using an A frame purely because it stops you from getting your bum down between the rails. If I could sit lower all in life would be good.

Good plan with the 4 link Wicked.

Yes, I noticed the same thing when I was doing mine. I welded 3/16" plate to the tub to use as the floor and bolted the floor directly to the frame (on a rubber gasket). My seat bottoms are directly on the floor, so therefore I am sitting directly on top of the frame - not inside of the frame. I still sit very low in the car.
I raced dirt modifieds for years, and we would put a piece of heavy plate in the floor to keep debris on the track from coming up through the floor like driveshafts, etc. That may have played a part in how I did mine.

  19. Nice build. I am digging the direction you are going with using some front split wishbones on the rear. I am looking forward to seeing how you are going to execute this. Keep it up!

Wicked, I mightadd a top center trianglated link off the top of the QC Housing (that bolts to the bell housing bolts and either angles out towards the kick up or to a center mount right at the back of the body..

117.. Might drill some into the rear crossmember as I want to chrome the rear spring. I am not wanting to drill holes all over the car but might place a few here and there.

Yes, that would be easy to hide and have your lower rods mounted so the rearend can rotate freely. Like a collar that completely surrounds the axle tube (clamps on) with a slot in it so you can keep it aligned with a peg welded to the axle tube.

How about a third (centre) link running just above the drive shaft and pivot it in line with the lower links, i.e. equal length links.

Might just need a slightly higher tunnel.

  29. Looking good Boones!!!

I have a '27 T front half waiting for me to get started on it. I built an A-based "modified" several years ago. A lot of it I liked. Some of it, I didn't. Hope to change those things this time around.

Anyway, yours is looking great! Can't wait to see more progress!

Hello Boone, I am starting a 1929 A coupster project and have been researching the ongoing split wishbone controversy. I really like the old school look of the split bones on the rear, but a lot of the posts on this board have me scared to go through with it. I came across your posts and wonder if you have decided on a final design. I guess I'm looking for someone to tell me what i want to hear!! I love the stance and look of your modified....very cool. Thanks!
