Hahaha... My second car was a '74 Spitfire... I can't imagine the pain in the ass it was to get those BFM (big fucking motors) in that little space... I had to replace the clutch plate once and had to basically rip the entire thing apart (I couldn't do it from underneath)... I did re-locate the gas tank... It was bungee'd inside the trunk... Why? So I could fit the 2 Kicker 12" subs and 300Watt amps in the car! With the right song, the bass would rattle the windows down.... back in the day...... hc
I knew this guy in TN that stuffed a 396 into TR7. He made one pass down the track and they told him to take it home. Ended up in the cornfield at the end of the track. The next owner had a small block in it and drove it on the street all the time.
The Sherman Allinson messerschmidt was the first one I thought of when I saw the subject line. You saved me a dig through my CD's. mike
I go on there sometimes. if you looked at every link it would take you about a month, some killer stuff!
I love that site. That's kinda of one of my interests. One of my backburner projects is building an MGB V8 iwith an aluminum Buick V8. Back in my useless youth, I put a SBC in a TR7 and it tore up the road (if the electrics didn't die every other day, LOL).
http://www.ntahc.org/modifiedhealeys/Photos/126Marian/Marian.htm Is actually my Dad's car, we almost have it back together again.. I'm changing the dash to fit around the electric power steering that my dad just installed. The power unit is actually located between the firewall and the steering wheel. We hope to drive down to L.A. for the fall fling Mopar show in Woodley park.
You guys are all nuts! Those tiny cars are too short, light, and cramped to handle that kind of pow- oh yeah, I drive a Morris Minor with a tunnel rammed 406 Chevy. Nevermind... But next time someone calls me nuts for what I drive, I'm gonna show 'em a photo of the Messerschmidt - that thing is the all-time winner! I love it.....
Friend of mine's brother put a Grand National V-6 into a TR-6. Handled real well until he smacked a guard rail at 120. Then there was the trip out to the Okanogan in 1979. Going down #1 Highway in my brothers' old hippy van when a Superbird went by us doing at least 130. There was an Austin Healy on his ass with a blown SBC. The guy in the Healey had a two foot long pony tail straight out behind him and looked like he was hanging on for dear life. Not really sure if Brit cars were meant for that type of thing. Tim Taylor, commenting on wife Jill buying a Healey - Why would you buy a car built by people that build fighter airplanes out of wood???
Or have you ever heard of Jim Lyttle? I met him at Hot August nites in Reno a few years ago and he showed me some pictures of cars he's built. One was a stretched BMW Isetta with a Allison V12, a VW bus with a Allison, a chopped 34 Ford that he named "Big Al" He put Allisons in everything! cool guy with lots of good stories!
ever see a datson 240 z with a 426 hemi! talk about getting out the shoe horn and vasaline! last i heard it still runs @ byron dragway, only with a 440.I bet its still a cluster fuck to get in though.
Here's a few pics of my last model A that recently sold on E-bay for around $20,000 with blown 460 ford....Cartoon land.
insert obligatory purple people eater pic here.. there is a cool anglia around here that has a gigantor motor.........i think he took it to the track the other day first time at a local cruise at the dragstrip...and blew it up. from what my co-worker tells me its the first time he actually got on it..... ..it went home on a trailer.
What is that thing? Looks like a Hemi in some kind of homebuilt. What is all this talk about Allison-engined cars? Anyone have any links? And yes, I've seen the Merlin V12'd '55 Chevy.. neat concept I guess, but the paint left a lot to be desired.
Got Gas, read it again it doesn't say Allison it says Allinson. Sherman and Allinson were drag racers out of Edmonton in the 50's/60's. They stuffed the Hemi into the Messerschmidt in that era Same Car mike
to the best of my knowledge, all of jim's allison powered cars were either drag cars or show cars, but he did drive a 389 powered crosley as a daily driver. b-t-w; if i'm not mistaken, big al was the very first one piece 'glass bodied flopper. if ya want to meet jim just go to speedweek and ask around. he'll be there. and he'll talk to you. if i ever get the 413 installed in my crosley, do you think that would qualify as a big engine in a little car?
I have an Anglia with a 458 BBC that's called "10 Lbs in a 5 Lb Box". Yeah, it's mostly engine............. Kevin in Seattle
Eric, I'm slotting a 215 Buick/Rover in my '34 Morris. It's obviously not a big inch motor, but it is physically bigger externally than a 350 Chevy, just half the power and weight. The 4 piece hood just folds neatly over the headers, so you can't see what is hiding in there.
After I met Jim in Reno he sent me a poster that has great pictures of most of his Allison powered creations, Big Al 1, 2 and 3, Alsetta, psycho cycle, quad Al, and Volswagen Vanagone. It's a great poster..it's too bad it isn't sold anywhere. If you'd like I'll try and take pics of the poster. I havn't seen pics of most of cars on the internet.
some guy built a mini with a chevy 350 some time back ,he had to sit in the back seat with 8 inches of space for his feet.................The prop was 8 inches long all in ...................Marq
I like the '68 Opel Kadet (hemi powered) run by Jr. Thompson and big John M., at the end of the Gasser era. In '69 they switched to a brand new GT. Anybody else like Opels?
