Unless you have very deep pockets to replace your engine every few years run the best filters Air. Oil and Fuel you can get. Looks are not worth worn out cylinder walls. I gave up on the scoop type filters a long time ago.
I see a BUNCH of small scoop types with only a screen to stop big trash. Dust will still go through. The cylinder walls in a block that has been run without a good filter look like they have been sandblasted. Cause they have been! peace
Anyone tried to fit some type of small air filter foam piece inside a scoop, stack or frogmouth to do a better job of filtration than just the screen? I really like the look of scoops, but agree it may not be worth the potential wear issues.
I admit I only have scoops with foam screens in them but the problem with trying to stuff a good quality filtration material in a scoop is the lack of surface area. A good filter will have a pretty big surface area to allow sufficient air flow.
Flatattackracing had some nice washable filters that fit in the scoop type air horns. They may still be available from Reds Headers.
Not running air filters on your engine is just as bad as not changing oil and filter regularly. Filters and fluid maintanence is the life of your engine.
HA! i had a guy tell me that one time. he said he ran a ugly *** grandma air filter til he gets to a show. i was laughing my *** off.
These are what you want for frog mouths. They have a washable foam filter protected with wire screens. You can get them through "The Hot Rod Company" which is an "Alliance" vendor.
I have at admit I only ran the scoops on the two x two setup on my 23, but I did turn them around backwards. Not ideal, but I was prepared to pay the piper as a tradeoff for them looking good. Never had a problem in the time I owned it, but longterm it might have been an issue. But yes, it is best to run filters. Don
Wasn't there a thread on how these things make your engine run like **** just a few weeks ago? I thought I seen a lot of complaints on those things. I have 3 of them and was going to get a 4th from Hot Rod Company (if they still carry them) but I don't want to deal with rough running issues if they are the culprit.
I think I read that also--Thats why I ask about them---trying to get more info before wasting more $$$$
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ JJ. I run these and my car runs like ****.....however, I took them off and it still runs like **** I honestly wouldn't consider these a filter. Better than nothing but not ideal.
My Dad used to run them, on his OT race 2.0 liter. (Dual Side Draft Webers) We tried several companies, but we kept ****ing the screens up about everyother race. (About 30 minutes of race time) We ended up going to a sock style filter, never had any issues. The frog mouths look pretty cool, but ya know if your not racing or anything just get what works best, or sacrafice performance for "cool points".
a friend asked why his oil was black, he didnt run a filter and lived on a dirt road, i told him he was a fool
I spent 15 years working on big trucks ***mins had a film we seen in training showed that 8 oz.s of dust wiped out a 855 cubic inch engine just think what it would do to a sbc
I never had any running issues at all, they worked fine. Maybe because I ran them backwards, not forcing air down their throats. For me it wouldn't make any sense to run them just for show because I am attending less and less shows and driving my cars more and more for just grocery runs, cruising around, and stuff like that. When you come out of a store and have a crowd around your car you want it to look it's best. Wasn't it Fernando who said "It is better to look good than to feel good ?" Don
Just wondering--- My frogmouths have a screen at the mouth-part (not down on top of the carb) Maybe it would help if when I'm driving if I would slip a sock,or foot from a pair of nylons over them Any opinions on that? I run mine facing backwards---heard somewhere that if you face them forward it disrupts the air flow into the carb.
Some of those nylons you wear are really sheer...think they'll filter enough PPM's? Those black ones with the stripe down the back really define your calf muscles....Mike & Larry pointed that out...
