Do the single idler gear drives make noise like the Pete Jackson dual idler setups? I have a 392 fuel Hemi with the single idler gear built into the aluminum front cover. I would like to use this setup, but it has the fuel pump drive setup.

Im not sure of the brand, but I think it is early Donovan engineering.

  2. Why would you want a gear drive???

    Gear drives rob power.

You should be able to get the cover plate without the pump drive from Donovan.

I have a milodon in my 392. It does not make any noise, but the blower belt sure does.

x2 I don't have the Donovan setup but it is a single idler gear setup. I can't hear mine over the weedburners on alcohol.

Does anyone make a dual idler gear drive for the 392?

Pete Jackson used to make a dual idler setup, but I haven't seen one in at least 20 years...

    OH! Sorry! :D Couldn't resist...

I understand the use of a gear drive, but I don't understand the need for the "whine". I remember a guy I knew around the corner from me that had a Pete Jackson "noisy" gear drive in his Model A PU with an SBC. It was annoying, didn't really sound like a blower, but it was like it was trying to impersonate one. Came across as more of an "impostor", really. I think the Hemi "speaks" for itself and doesn't need any gimmicky sounding tricks. Almost blasphemy, really. But that's just my 2-cents.

So maybe someone can explain to me the desire to own a "noisy" gear drive? Is the noise somehow performance improving or a characteristic of an performance improving device that can only be had with the whine? I promise I'm not trying to be a smart-***. It's an honest question. I've always wondered why people buy the "noisy" gear drives.

Miloden makes one. P/N 13600. It's only a single idler and isn't offered as "noisy".

i made them at summers bros for the sbc and bbc , but the majority were sold to the sprint car guys and they like them because of the timing but the downfall was the vibrations destroying the bearings , so thier motors get torn down more often ! not good for the street

I love cheese and I like the gear whine. Don't understand the poser comment. A gear whine is what it is.

You can say this about most visual mods, so why not audio mods. Basically, it comes down to personal taste.

Yes...it's a characteristic....straight cut gears are going to whine. Many hi-po manual trans whine and so do quick changes....nothing "poser" about those...

And don't confuse a FIXED IDLER drive as OP has with a cheap *** dual floating idler setup.....Fixed idler drives are stable as a rock...:D

Understand. Just asking. Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers... Guess that probably came across wrong.
