Where can I find information or instructions on how to install a dropped axle in my 1930 Model A without having to split the wishbone and keep as much of the front end components as possible. I have seen such dropped axle Model A's and would like to know how it is accomplished. Thanks for your help and reponses.

the drop is in the axle ends so I think the wishbone would still work unsplit. The spindle arms would need to be heated and bent so the tie rod will clear the bone.

  3. what are you running for brakes
thats the only area that needs to be looked at

If you are running the Banger just take out old axle and install new one. It's that simple. IF you are changing to juice brakes you will need to do some spindle work as stated prior. If you have a V-8 in there depending on what it is you may need to split them. But installing the axle is eeeeeaaaaasy if the perch bolts come out. If not take the whole front end out and start the heat and cool method to get the perches out. Be patient or you'll cost yourself alot of heartache and money. If you are going over a 2" drop and have the mechanical brakes on it you are better off converting to juice ones. But if you order a 2" drop you can use 32-34 spindles and perches for the mechanical geometerey of the brake rods.

    Good luck,

When shopping for an axle you need to know the perch pin measurement to match center to center of your perch pin/wishbone measurement, and aftermarket axles come with 2.25 inch perch pin boxes and model A's are 2".

Moot points if you are taking out your original axle and having it dropped. Somewhere it the following threads there is mention of a HAMB member who drops axles.

If you haven't been by my shop, come down the corner of 28th and main and look at my coupe, search me threads started for "another stocker falls....." You need to be aware that some of the axles have a wider perch center to center than stock. In this case your wishbone will not work. I've got an ear appointment in the morning but should be there by 11:00.

Hi, first of all the spring perch boss from a model A is 2.250" thick and not 2".
I tried using a 46" wide 4" dropped I-beam. The spring perch bosses are closer together than the stock axle. You can fit your unsplit radius rod because it's flexible enough to bend in. But when you do the wishbone gets longer and if you put the axle in the front crossmember the radius ball won't fit and if you first put the radius ball in the spring won't fit the crossmember.
That's why I didn't use a 46" wide axle but I used a 1935 front I-beam, it has a little more drop than an A. But using this axle (wich is only 2" thick on the perch bosses) I had to us two special washers each side to make up for the thinner perch boss (one on top the axle and one on the bottom).
    hope this helps:)
