The phone number on the cards - NEwark 5-6182 - would date the time it was written to about 1955 or after. The '5' wasn't in use until about 1955. Prior to that the number would have been NEwark 6182.

That's a really nice old custom you've got, congratulations! I've looked at it earlier at Kustomrama.com.

You've probably already got the flashers working, but...
I think the function where stop lights work also as blinkers is in the flasher switch, not in the relay.

The stop light wire goes from stop light switch to the flasher switch. When the flasher switch lever is centered (i.e. you're not using the flasher), the switch just connects the wire to two individual stop light wires that go to the stop lights.

When you turn the switch lever to put another side's flashers on, the switch disconnects the stop light switch wire from the individual stop light wire of the flashing side, and connects that side's stoplight wire (and the front flasher wire of that side) to the flasher relay.

It's really a simple system, I just hope I told it in an understandable way... I think most American cars are wired this way. So, to a car that didn't originally have flashers you need to add the individual wire to go to another one of the stoplights. What kind of flasher switch do you have now? Maybe it's suitable, but just not wired like it should to the stop lights as was the case with my 1950.

The flasher switch itself doesn't know if the voltage is 6 or 12 volts. The currents are bigger with 6 volts, though, but I think usually that's not a problem.

Thanks for the kind words Kaptain :)

Yeah I got the flashers working, when I first realized how it were working it was pretty simple. Thanks for your explanation anyway, I guess someone else may have use for it too.

And yeah, I'm working on an updated on the car pretty soon :) But first it's BONANZA time!!

don;t wory about the pits in the chrome. our car was dry stored since 1965 when the first owner sold it to a collector. the car is rust free and perfectly preserved with the exception of some pittiness in the chrome. We feel pretty fortunate to have such a well preserved car and im sure you do too. it doesnt have to be perfect and sometimes its really nice to see that "age" on the vintage tin. What a great car and a great find. I hope you find more info about it and the owner. ive been trying for months to figure out more info about the family/lady who owned ours and didnt have much luck. I hope you have better luck. keep us updated on it!

seems the car was probably black when Barris did the work. The piping in the headliner is black (i think) and they probably did that to compliment the black color of the car. Which means it was most likely purple before Barris did the work for the owner at that time.

Looks like a Chevy accessory "****erfly" steering wheel, available '50-'52.

Good to hear the black paint probably is part of the car's "Barris history". Whatever the case, I've been hoping all the way it would stay black! :)

Similar steering wheel is reproduced and it's being sold at least by the Chevs of the 40's.

The pits are a part of this cars soul, so it's not bothering me at all :) I had Fatlucky check out the interior on it while he was in Oslo, and he gave me some advices on what I could do to preserve this as good as possible! I will follow his tips as good as I can to keep the old crusty interior in a good shape. I have been doing some research on the cars past, and have some leads I'm following, more on this in my way too late update thread :)

My Dashboard is dark brown, so I guess the car may have been the same color when Barris restyled it. Barris Kustoms shaved the door handles and installed solenoids in the doors. The "switches" for the solenoids in the engine compartment...(don't know what they're called in english, so I'm calling them switches)... have purple overspray on them. So the car was most likely painted purple after the car left the Barris shop. Sometime after that it was painted black, and maybe after that they may have installed a "matching" headliner... but this is just guessings :)

Oh yeah, I'm keeping it black! If I need to repaint it one day I'll most likely put purple primer on it and drive it like this for a while...before I paint it black again :)

It's time for an updated :)
I have been so busy writing on everyone else's cars so I haven't updated this thread in ages. It's time to wake it up from the dead again I guess...

So with good help from my brother...or was it I that tried to help him??...anyhow... we built a new 235 engine for the Chevy after the one that came went to pieces on my third drive....more on that later. We fit the new engine with a new Isky cam and all of the old parts that came with the car in the trunk. Below are some photos from when we built it:

And here is one photo after we dropped it into the car:

The engine worked very good, and after it was done it has taken me back and forth to Helsinki, Finland without a problem :)

Currently I'm trying to clean the engine compartment up a little and make it period correct with the right parts...I need a bunch of old hose clamps etc before this job is done. As you can see below I have started by replacing the ugly orange oil filter above with an old chrome filter that I found on eBay. Next up is a new cloth wire harness. I'm also looking for an old battery cover and an old fuel pressure adjuster? So if anyone have that lying around I'm interested. An old filt-o-reg would have looked nice. When It comes to the battery cover I'm considering making one in white tuck and roll...but it may be a little over the top for such a mild car...

What a neat find! That's a great looking car. The new mill looks really nice and I'll bet it runs great. Nice work.

Thanks. Just regular gold paint...can't remember what brand...

    Me too :)

The Howard cam was for a 216 engine, so we stopped by Isky on the latest trip to Cali to buy one for the 235.
