Well I bring home the new ride this weekend. The first thing I plan on doing to it is removing the original dive line ( in-line 6,trans and rear axle) and storing them away for safe keeping. This is wear all the experts on here come in to play. I do not want to do the same old thing and replace it with a small/big block so I'm going to use a in-line six. I feel this will be different and some what keep the look of the original motor. I think i want to use one of the following the 225, 292 or if i can locate one a 302. what are the pros and cons these motors and is there a better motor that i should be thinking of? thanks in advance.
glad to see you got that car,one cool ride.I think if you could find a 302,some go fast parts ,nice 5spd,9"rear.you be stylin
Thanks GrayB you got it right but i'll be using a 10 bolt because thats what the air rides set up for.
well thats 2 vote for the 4.0L now does anybody have some seat of the pants feedback on my motor choices??
Given the 20% less displacement and the lack of available speed equipment. I don't think so. It is thinking outside the box, though.

Some questions? No hop up stuff available for your OEM motor then? Was Packard affiliated / owned by any of the other big mfgs? If so, you might consider updating your I-6 with a "family" motor. There is a nice thread on OHC Ponchos here, how about that? Lastlly, how about some of the HO Hudson motors? Have fun, Gary
4.0Ltr we've got one with over 169.ooo miles W/no major repairs, never even opened it up.{knock on wood} gets 16-19mpg on hyway at 65-70mph,ya can do a stroker for next to no $, a 4.6Ltr check this out....... http://www.ajeepthing.com/stroker-motor.html
A nice 302 with a 200R4 ****** makes for cool cruising. The car look very nice and will look good. CRUISER
I like the idea of a Jimmy 6 but being a Packard I'm thinking a Straight 8 or a v-12 should be under that hood. Say a dressed GMC 12 with 50's Packard scripts welded into the covers.
No hop up stuff available for your OEM motor then? There are but do not what to used it. rather abuse a differant motor keep the packard one stock. Was Packard affiliated / owned by any of the other big mfgs? If so, you might consider updating your I-6 with a "family" motor. This i do not know?
Packard was an true independent until the last years when Studebaker bought them. The last true Packard was a '56... the '57's an '58's were gussied up Studebaker Hawks... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packard
Are you trying to stick to traditional styling? If you are not so concerned, there are lots of options for a i-6. Especially with a little thinking you can make them look pretty neat... quad4rods does a nice example with a 2.4 ltr 4 banger (little small for your application though) but it does use sidedrafts - a very nice touch. there is a model a in denmark (i think?) that they put a high output cosworth engine in and it flys! looks darn original too. (web search under cosworth model a i think) i am a big fan of lexus/toyota i-6's - tons of parts (yes, yes, the 2JZ/1JZ is a supra motor too), though there are plenty of other ones. Chevy has the i-5 if you want something different - so does Volvo. In my 37 pack i'll probably end up with a Volvo T6, twin turbo'd. All depends on what your looking for. Great car btw!!
I fooled around with a Packard idea once. Seems to me that Fat Man Fabrications can supply an R&P front end, complete with mounts. Don't recall the price, butseems to me it beat fabrication.
How about a Packard V8? In the 60's, a '37 Chevy sedan with a Packard V8 (with four pots on a U-Fab manifold) actually won the Pikes Peak Hill Climb! (No kiddin' !)
