So the town i grew up in still has the very first fire truck they ever bought. Its a 1926 LeFrance. Theyve been asking me to fix it for years now (they have a budget barely above 0). Now that my shop is doing beter im feeling charitable and im about to go pick it up and finish it up for them... Volunteers over the years have done this and that (most of which needs to be redone) and a few parts have grown legs and walked off (thermistor, hood, and the front emblem) if any one knows of any could you help me out? If i could just get a patern of a hood i could make one. Many parts are rusted but almost everything is there enough to be able for me to remake. Have the original motor and trans. But they not interested in putting it back in. They only want it to be able to "drive, stop, and be red". I was thinking a gm 6 cyl and 3 speed? or international? Originally im pretty sure this didnt have any front brakes and the rear brakes are cable operated. Wants GOOD brakes, anyway to put front brakes on and make them hydraulic? Its a basket case... the completed pic is what its suppossed to look like..And ANY info i can get on this would be great... And that motor and trans WILL be for sale to fund more things to go into the project. so if anyone needs it you know...
Try some of these. http://www.texasfiremuseum.org/Restoration.htm http://www.spaamfaa.org/alfresources2.html http://www.yngfire.com/index.php
If they don't care about powertrain, get cheap and reliable. Inline 6's from any of the big 3 will do it. For brakes is it possible to put a large truck disc rotor/caliper on the rear (or any) yoke along the drive shaft? Not so visible and they work well.
I was gonna recommend SPAAMFAA as a resource , but LB already did . My grandfather was a looooong time member & past president (he died a couple years ago) - lots of helpful folks there .
Try a guy named Ken Soderbeck in Jackson Michigan. He restores fire equipment as far back as steam powered stuff. If there are parts anywhere he will know. I think the name of his company is called "Hand & Hand". Ironically his shop was damaged by fire awhile back but I believe he is back up & running again. Reproduction emblems & stuff are available. There is a "fire muster" in Jackson Michigan once a year - January I think. Lots of fire truck parts & other fire stuff, sort of a fire swap meet.
